The Cook Islands are just northeast of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean. The islands control 2.2 million square kilometers of ocean and consist of fifteen major islands. How to Decide Where to Stay in the Cook Islands

The island of Aitutaki is only 12 kilometres in circumference but is well matched with it's other more recognized island counterparts in other areas of the world such as the Maldives and the Caribbean. These other places have much higher concentrations of populus visiting their shores, but possibly this is one of the reasons why Aitutaki is such a magical place to stay - it is more or less untouched by "civilization" and certainly the infrastructure on the island would be a lot less than many have. Because of this it would seem improbable to find any Aitutaki Hotels on such a small island, whereas in fact there are two relatively large ones situated on different areas of the island.

Aitutaki is becoming more and more recognized as an idyllic location and destination and the concept of swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, brilliantly coloured sunsets and crystal clear turquoise waters is never more obviously identified than here, which is perhaps why on this tiny area of land, accommodation for the mass market has been set up to cater for those visitors who prefer bigger hotels to stay in for their holidays through to the smaller more personalized and private villa type accommodation of which there is also becoming a greater range of luxury choice.

The two Aitutaki Hotels that are here offer a range of rooms, from the very popular overwater bungalows which extend out over the white sand into the lagoon area. These bungalows are small, have one bedroom and a lounge type area but of course a highlight of these is the fact that when you step out on to the deck of the bungalow, you are over the water and the tropical ambiance is everywhere. Some people feel that the cost of this category of accommodation is far to expensive for what is actually provided, so they may choose the option of a beachfront unit, most of which are still on the white sand.

Both the Aitutaki Hotels on the island cater for families and so provide either adjoining units or larger family style units, however because of the expense of the domestic inter island flights from Rarotonga to Aitutaki, it is predominantly a couples destination and not too many families at this point in time continue on past Rarotonga, however as more flights, bigger aircraft and service of the island increases, costs will probably reduce on these flights and more families will venture on to this beautiful location.

The restaurants in the Aitutaki Hotels are well equipped to cater for guests staying elsewhere on the island and have relatively large seating capacities. However the service in these restaurants can be "up and down" and vary according to the management in place at the time.
