Belarus as a Tourist Destination

Author: Stewart Palmer

Belarus was formerly known as "White Russia" and is located between Russia and Poland bordering Ukraine to the south.
It is a country of wide plains, deep dark forests and over ten thousand lakes. There are also large tracts of wild, desolate marshland. Everywhere, the land is relatively flat with three major rivers running through it. These are the Neman, the Pripyat, and the Dnepr. The Dnepr river flows southward towards the Black Sea, whilst both the Neman and the Pripyat flow eastward and into the Dnepr.

The forests cover over one third of Belarus’s 80,000 square miles (about the same size as the state of Kansas or Great Britain). They are incredibly beautiful and mysterious places where birches, oaks, maple and pines provide shelter for European bison, bears, wolves, lynx, elk and deer. Where the forest ends, the tourist will find picturesque villages and historical monuments in the form of churches, monasteries and castles that date back to the twelfth century.
Minsk is the capital city where nearly two million of Belarus’s 10 million inhabitants live. It is situated in a picturesque location by the river Svisloch which was once one of the busiest trade routes connecting the Baltic and the Black seas. The city is a great centre of Belarusian culture, presenting the country’s story in its many museums and exhibitions. It is also the home of the world famous Belarusian Ballet.
Belarus is one of Europe’s poorest countries with an average monthly salary of $190 in 2007. It has an aging population, a negative population growth rate and high annual inflation. Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, Belarus remains very much a state controlled economy and is a presidential republic.
Belarus was devastated by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Although in the Ukraine, Chernobyl is located only 3 miles from the Belarus border and huge areas of Belarus’s agricultural land has remained contaminated ever since.
Climate
The climate of Belarus brings harsh winters and cool, damp summers to many parts. However, hot summers are not unusual, particularly in and around Minsk where temperatures often reach the high seventies Fahrenheit. An average rainfall of around 24 inches can be expected.
Visiting Belarus
Despite the poverty and hardships faced by this nation, it is definitely a country with a great deal to offer tourists looking for somewhere that it is off the beaten track. It is a country that invites exploration by those blessed with a sense of adventure or just the desire to visit places that have not been spoiled by mass tourism.
Yet Belarus is not difficult to get to, with regular flights from London and many other European cities. An alternative that will appeal to many is to combine a holiday in Belarus with a tour of adjoining countries: for example, flying out to Warsaw, touring Poland and then travelling by road into Belarus.

Belarus An Interesting Place To Visit

Author: Gordon Warre

Belarus is a presidential republic, governed by a president and the National Assembly. Belarus is landlocked, relatively flat, and contains large tracts of marshy land. Belarus has historically been a Russian Orthodox country, with minorities practicing Catholicism, Judaism, and other religions. Belarus has been described as "a small-scale Soviet Union at its finest period".

Belarus receives heavily discounted oil and natural gas from Russia and much of Belarus' growth can be attributed to the re-export of Russian oil at market prices. Belarus has only small reserves of petroleum and natural gas and imports most of its oil and gas from Russia. Belarusian membership in the Council of Europe was not supported; bilateral relations at the ministerial level were suspended; and EU technical assistance programs were frozen.

Belarusian tourist visas are issued upon presentation of the original of the tourist voucher received from any Belarusian tour operator or tourist agency. Belarus won its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 but remains close to Russia economically and politically. The Constitution of Belarus does not declare an official religion, although the primary religion in the country is Russian Orthodox. The change was made to reflect adequately the Belarusian language form of the name. The Belarusian Constitution forbids the use of special extra-judicial courts. Like many other European countries, Belarus has a negative population growth rate and a negative natural growth rate. At the end of the 19th century, major Belarusian cities formed their own opera and ballet companies. The largest media holding group in Belarus is the state-owned National State Teleradiocompany.

Ukraine's declaration of independence, in particular, led the leaders of then Belarusian SSR to realize that the Soviet Union was on the brink of collapsing, which it did. The BPF declared itself a movement open to any individual or party, including communists, provided that those who joined shared its basic goal of a fully independent and democratic Belarus. Because of these restrictive economic policies, Belarus has had trouble attracting foreign investment. By the end of Second Northern War the region of Prussia, Poland and GDL (Belarus and all Baltic states) was so demolished that for about 100 years culture and civilization was pretty much suspended here.

The areas were claimed because of a Belarusian majority according to demographic research, although there were also numbers of Lithuanians, Poles and people speaking pidgins of Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish, as well as many Jews, mostly in towns and cities (in some towns they made up a majority).

Things To See On Your Holidays In Belarus

Author: Andrew Gibson

When anyone thinks of war whether it is World War I or World War II, Napoleon war or Northern wars, there is only one great place that could offer plenty of rich memories of these great events of our time, that place is Belarus. Aside from these events, Belarus has plenty of history of Russian Socialist Revolution, as well as the Jewish History.

Many known personalities were born or have roots in Belarus, not to mention the Bielski brothers, Irving Berlin, David Mayer-Lanski and many others who have helped shape our world history. So that when one wants a great appreciation of world history, Belarus will be an informative place of destination.

For example, the Khatyn, a memorial to a village burned during WW II, is one piece of evidence that Belarus had an active role during WW II. It has a Graveyard of Villages - each grave symbolizes each one of the Belarusian Villages that have shared their terrible fate with Khatyn.

Another is the Brestkaya Krepasc or the Brest Forest, this is famous by the deed of Belarus heroic garrison. Belarusians had an unprecedented guerilla resistance scale. These partisan fighters stayed in Belarusians woods fighting Germans. In commemoration of this deed, Brest Forest was arisen in memory of the partisan fighters.

Aside from these heroic memorials, Belarus has plenty of XII-XIV century's castles. The Mir Castle, one of the many former residences of the famous Belarusian, is well preserved and serves now as a residence of the college of architectural restoration. The other castles include Nvasvizh, Zaslaue, Lida, and Kamianec.

The 12th Century orthodox churches are also well preserved in Belarus. The St. Sophia Cathedral of Polacak is standing beautiful and mighty in Belarus. The famous Farny Jesuit Cathedral in Hrodna is one of the well preserved and main attractions of Belarus.

Besides these historical places, Belarus has many attractions in its nature. Aside from the fact that it is a country of thousands of lakes, it has the last piece of primeval European forest. Its national park, Belavezha, has the relict of a European relative of Buffalo- Zoobr. Its capital city, Minsk, is designed similarly to a huge botanical garden.

Other natural attractions include the Belarus Typical Landscapes that include pine and mixed woods. Tourists can also enjoy bird watching in the vast fields, forests and marshlands of Belarus. It has no private lands, so camping is quite popular with tourists. They can fish, gather berries, mushrooms and flowers, and swim in the lake without any hassle. The pace in Belarus is slow and relaxing and the people are warm and welcoming to tourists.
