Travel to The Netherlands

Author: Attila Jancsina

The Netherlands (it is often called "Holland", though this is not really correct) is famous for its flowers, windmills and wooden shoes. Flowers can be found in the Keukenhof, where you can see lots of different tulips, but there are several flower markets, too.

The two most visited windmills are Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk. Both are still working. You can enjoy the scenic land of windmills and tulips in the countryside and numerous medieval towns and beaches can be found on the coastline.

The Netherlands is well known for its stable democracy and tolerance, too. Its laws allow soft drug - in small quantities and only for personal - use, prostitution, abortion, euthanasia and gay marriage. Interestingly you can buy marijuana legally in coffee shops. But it doesn't mean that the whole country has liberal attitude. There has always been a contrast between conservativeness and liberalism, particularly because a strong Protestant Calvinist tradition exists.

It is a curiosity that a huge part of the country lies below sea level, that's why the Dutch always struggle against flooding.

The capital city, Amsterdam is known as one of the most romantic cities in Europe and is one of Europe's great destinations. It is a good idea to try carpooling, which is a practical way of traveling not only for students but everyone who consider traveling on budget. The city is full of canals and bridges, canal boat tour is one of the most fascinating highlights.

As for the climate, winters are cold and summers are mild. The best period is from April to October. It is recommended to travel in the spring because of the beautiful tulips.

If you don't want to spend too much, try to avoid nightlife in Amsterdam, because that is pretty expensive, and try to stay in budget hotels. You can easily find many of them throughout the city. For example Atlanta Hotel is right in the center of Amsterdam, Hotel My Home is a nice family run budget hotel also in the heart of the city, or Borgmann Villa Hotel is few minutes from the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Concertgebouw.

Amsterdam has a lot of great art museums and vivid cultural life. Actually, there were some great Dutch masters. Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, Anne Frank House and The Van Gogh Museum with the greatest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings are the most important museums.

The most popular way of transport here is cycling. It is because the country is absolutely flat and sometimes it is faster than any other means of transport: car, bus or tram. There is a complete net of cycle paths and cycle lanes and you can rent a bike in almost each city or town.

You may visit one of the festivals in the country, too. Dancevalley is a three-day long summer dance festival, one of the biggest European music festivals. The Lowlands festival focuses on alternative music, but also offers many cultural programs with visual arts, literature, film and theater events. It is situated close to an artificial island in the middle of Holland called Flevoland.

A Tour in Amsterdam’s Golden Age Canals

Author: Steve

The city of Amsterdam is famous for its numbers of canals and is even considered as the Venice of the North.

So when you decide to travel to Amsterdam, make sure that you would not deprive yourself of a canal tour in exploring the architectural and cultural areas inside the city. Such tour can be both relaxing and fascinating by day as you catch sight of the beautiful views and sceneries. And it can be romantic and enchanting at night as you pass by illuminated bridges and houses.

The famous canals of Amsterdam can be best explored by foot. As you slowly stroll along the city’s canals, you will discover and appreciate more the uniquely crafted gable, canal boats, canal houses, cafes, museums, among many others.

However, riding on canal boats are a much preferred way to explore the city from the water. It is also a solution for those who are in the rush to see the most of Amsterdam within just an hour.

The Golden Age Canals trip should never be neglected on your visit to Amsterdam. These canals are comprised of three 17th-century canals, namely, the Keisersgracht (Emperor’s Canal), Prinsengracht (Princes’ Canal), and Herengracht (Gentlemen’s Canal), which are actually symbols of the pride and wealth of the city.

On your tour, you can pay a visit to one of Amsterdam’s top museums, the Museum Van Loon, a very breathtaking canal house built during the 18th century. It is owned by the prominent Van Loon family. The museum displays the family’s belongings, including family portraits, heirloom treasures and other exquisite furniture.

Another place worth dropping by is the Noordermarkt market square. On Monday mornings, from 9am until 1pm, the Jordaan quarter has a great flea market where you can find fabrics, records, antiques, and piles of low-priced second-hand clothes. The Jordaan itself has several nice shops, bars, and restaurants. On Saturdays, the Noordermarkt becomes a biological food market from 9am up to 4pm, where they offer fresh organic vegetables, fruits, oils, herbs, and many others. You can drop by on these days and you can buy something of value but at very affordable prices.

Indeed, a tour in Amsterdam’s Golden Age Canals should never be missed when you get the chance to be in the city. The Grachtengordel (Canal Belt) has a lot of cultural and architectural history that will surely impress every Amsterdam visitor.

Eight Ways to Vacation in Holland

Author: Keith J. Valentine

What can you see when you're on vacation in Holland? Is there anything of interest that is fun to do? Some of the things that Holland is known for include tulips, cheese, the paintings of Rembrandt and Van Gogh, windmills, clogs, diamond cutting, quaint buildings, pottery, bicycles and the canals of Amsterdam. You will learn about eight places you can go to see some of them right here. Find out about some of the cities, towns and villages that you'll see when you're on vacation in Holland, a small European country, part of The Netherlands, bordering Germany and Belgium, a little larger than the State of Maryland.

In Amsterdam you can take one of 110 glass-topped cruise boats along some of the 165 canals and see the world's narrowest house – only one metre wide; or visit Coster Diamonds to see how these jewels are cut and polished; walk across a few of the 1,281 bridges in the city; drop by the Anne Frank House, or take in the Rijksmuseum and feast on Rembrandt's masterpieces including the "Nightwatch".

If you prefer tulips instead, impose on the Bulb Fields in the "Garden of Europe" at Keukenhof, the world's largest flower garden. Indubitably a sight to behold! Certainly a must-see when on vacation in Holland.

How about wildlife and nature trails? – A short drive will take you to Holland's largest park: de Hoge Veluwe, 5,500 hectares of woodland, heathland, lakes and driftsand; and breeze into the Kröller-Müller Museum, which houses some of Van Gogh's most famous works.

Something cheesy? – See how the famous "Edamer" cheese, as it is known, is made in the village of Edam. It has a very mild taste, slightly salty or nutty and almost no smell when compared to other cheeses. It also has a significantly lower fat content than many other traditional cheeses.

Why not check out the Zaanse Schans? – A delightful old hamlet on the banks of the River Zaan, with characteristic green wooden houses, charming stylized gardens, small hump-backed bridges, tradesmen's workshops, historic windmills, engaging little shops and discover the art of clog making too when you're on vacation in Holland.

Palatial settings? – Hang around the 17th century Het Loo, previously a royal palace with its formal gardens, at Apeldoorn. In the 18th century, William III's baroque garden was swept away for a landscape park in the English taste.

Always wondered how ornaments are made? – Frequent the pottery factory in Delft. Delftware is a blue and white pottery, part of the "tin glaze" style, in which tin-based white glaze is first applied, then metal oxide decoration and finally a lead-based clear glaze overcoat to make the surface glossy.

Want to see a village where life has hardly changed over the last 400 years? – Visit Staphorst, famous for many of its residents wearing traditional dutch clothing. It also happens to be one of the most religious villages of the Netherlands.

As you can see you will have your favourite places to see when you're on vacation in Holland but why not plan your trip so that you can see them all? The Netherlands is not that large a country so distances are short and you can cover a lot of ground in a day when you're on vacation in Holland; the dutch are friendly and they will make you feel welcome no matter which sights you decide to visit.
