Warsaw Offers a Mix of Culture and Solitude

Author: Gaizka Pujana

Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is also the country's largest city. It is located midway between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains and is the seventh biggest city in the European Union. The city gave its name to many important events and documents, including the Warsaw Pact, the Warsaw Convention, and the Treaty of Warsaw.

The name "Warsaw" has an interesting and charming derivation. It came from an older Polish word, "Warszewa." This older term means "owned by Warsz." Warsz was believed to be a fisherman named Wars and his wife Sawa.

For tourists interested in culture, Warsaw makes an excellent destination. Until World War II, Warsaw's Theatre Square was considered Poland's cultural hub and held many theaters dating back to around 1833. Among these theaters were Teatr Wielki, Rozmaitosci Theatre, and the National Theatre. In the nearby Saxon Garden, the Summer Theatre existed between 1870 and 1939.

Today, there are over 30 major theaters located throughout the city, such as the National Theater and the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Because of its theatrical culture, Warsaw seems to attract a great deal of young, off-stream directors and performers. The smaller shows they produce are generally shown in some of the city's smaller theaters.

In addition to its many theaters, Warsaw also holds many famous tourist attractions. For example, within the Old Town quarter alone tourists can visit the Royal Castle, King Zygmunt's Column, Square Market, and the Barbican. South of the Old Town quarter lies the Royal Route where tourists can see many classicist palaces, the Warsaw University campus, and the Presidential Palace.

Ten minute's walk from Old Town is Warsaw's oldest public park, the Ogrod Saski where tourists can enjoy a bit of a rest from the city's hustle and bustle. Another quiet place in Warsaw is the Powazki Cemetery, which is one of the most ancient cemeteries in Europe. Within the cemetery are a great deal of sculptures, many of which were created by some of Warsaw's most famous sculptors. Near the Powazki Cemetery is Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery, one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe.

Tourists interested in seeing Warsaw's many sights will have a choice of several vacation accommodations, including both hotels and holiday apartments.

Examples of hotels in Warsaw, Poland include:

Hotel Jan III Sobieski: This four-star hotel is both modern and luxurious. It is located near the museum area, shopping center, the university, and Old Town. While the beautiful rooms on eight floors will surely please guests, the hotel is actually known for its magnificent cuisine.

Polonia Palace Hotel: 206 stylish rooms are available to accommodate guests of this gorgeous hotel. In addition to its comfortable rooms, the hotel features the Strauss restaurant where guests will enjoy European and traditional Polish cuisine. Also on site is the Bojangles Bar & Lounge with classic swing music in the style of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and other music legends.

Le Royal Meridien Bristol Hotel: This hotel is considered among the most prestigious in Warsaw. It boasts 205 rooms and was built in 1899. Each room was individually decorated and features traditional furnishings.

Examples of holiday apartments in Warsaw, Poland are:

Rynek Jazz Apartment: This beautiful apartment features a lovely view of Old Town Square. Because of its location, guests will enjoy easy access to museums, shops, and traditional Polish food. The apartment is fully equipped for a comfortable stay.

Apartment Bielany: This apartment is right next to a large park and close to bus transport to the center of the city. Includes a completely equipped kitchen, balcony, cable/satellite television, and Internet access.

Studio Warsaw Center: This studio apartment is situated right on the most well-known street in Warsaw. Features a small kitchen, Internet access, and cable/satellite television. Sleeps two guests in one bedroom.

While there is a great deal to see in the city of Warsaw, there are also plenty of quiet, green places to relax and unwind. Visitors to Warsaw will enjoy fantastic accommodations at a variety of prices to meet anyone's needs

Past and Present, Old and Young Mingle In Rynek Glowny

Author: ProtoTravels

Rynek Glowny, the Grand Square of Krakow, Poland, is the very heartbeat of the city. This ten acre square is the largest of all the city squares in Europe’s medieval cities. Easily accessible on foot, 11 streets and 2 passages lead into the square. No vehicles are allowed within its limits. Over the years this hub of activity has not diminished in importance to the city’s residents. To this day it serves as a popular place to meet and socialize, shop and worship.

One of the most famous architectural structures of Rynek Glowny is Sukiennice, translated Cloth Hall. This is arguably the oldest shopping mall in the world, having housed merchants since the 6th century. Today the bottom floor is still full of shops, selling mostly souvenirs, while the top floor has been converted into a museum. There are also two large cafes within the Hall. The 14th Century Basilica of the Virgin Mary is also a popular attraction of the square, largely due to its astonishing Great Altar. This 3 story high altarpiece was carved by Veit Stoss, and if you visit the Basilica before noon on a workday, you will be privileged to see it open. Another famous church is the small Church of St. Wojciech, or St. Ad Albert’s, in English. It is one of the oldest stone churches in the country, and is still a popular place of worship among Krakow residents. Its basement is home to the small Museum of the History of the Market Square.

At 70 meters, the leaning 13th century Town Hall Tower is an astounding exhibition of Gothic architecture. Climbing the 100 steep and narrow stairs to the top affords a rewarding view of the entire square. Below the Tower are vast cellars that once served as the city dungeon, and later as a popular beerhouse. At present they hold a café and theater, as well as the City of Krakow Historical Museum. Over time, sectors of the square have been raised as much as 5 meters, created many underground basements and passageways. Many of these have been converted into popular cafes and restaurants, as well as theaters. The most famous is probably the Piwnica pod Baranami, translated The Basement under the Rams, which is home to the Polish Carabet.

On a warm sunny day the inviting benches strewn about Rynek Glowny are a great place to congregate. The Adam Mickiwewicz Monument, built in memory of the greatest Polish Romantic poet of the 19th century serves as a common meeting place among locals. In good weather many open air events are hosted in the square, from musical to theatrical, commercial and political. On colder days the cafes, restaurants, and theaters offer shelter from the elements, warm conversation and entertainment. A testament to the past and present, Rynek Glowny represents the best of Poland culture and economy.

Poland - A Great Place to Spend Your Holiday

Author: Mrbond74 Peterson

If you are looking for a perfect summer holiday destination, European countries like Italy, Greece, Spain, France, and the UK may come in mind. Those are the usual destinations that holiday-makers go for. To get away from the usual tourist crowds, spend your holiday vacation at Poland. Get to explore the exciting and beautiful place of Poland without sacrificing your budget. With Poland's rich history, torn apart by different factions and put back together several times, you will be awed by its fighting spirit. You will see how the fighting tore an entire area at the Warsaw city and you will also see the efforts made to restore a part of it. Another city famous for its magnificent beauty is Lodz.

The most visited place in Poland though is the Krakow (Cracow). It has a population of one million and almost the same number of tourists visit the place every year. It is where the oldest universities in Europe are located including the Jagiellonian University.

The largest medieval market square in Europe is also located in Poland which is the city centre, or town square. It is actually a World Heritage Site. The best time to go here is on weekends where you will be able to find various things from food to household items from the different markets that set up here. In the center is the Cloth Hall that originally serve as a conduit for the cloth trade, but has been modified over time. The St. Mary's Church which is just near the town square is one of the most beautiful churches in Poland. It has an altar carved by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz). A bugle is played every hour in the highest tower to commemorate the Tatar raids on the city which happened in the 13th century. The Town Hall Tower, on the other hand, occupies the entire western section of the square.

The square is a great place to visit during your holidays to Poland. You can spend your day sitting there and get lost in the vibe of the city. There are also a lot of performers that have spread throughout the square. There are jugglers and musicians, and the cafes and their outdoor seating are also scattered everywhere.

Two of the places you should not also forget to visit is the royal castle and the royal route. The route starts from Matejko Square. From the square, you then go to Wawel Hill where the castle is located. The castle is a huge complex built in the year 1000. This is a place where you should really see yourself and enjoy the sight. Then buy yourself a ticket to see the dragon in an underground passage at the bottom of the hill. The dragon that breathes fire once in every minute is just actually a model. Nevertheless, its a must-see for everyone.

Karkow is a wonderful city for all people. If you want cheap holidays, there are a lot of hotels and hostels where you can stay in that offers discounts. There are also a lot of restaurants and cafes around the square where you can buy your food. You do not have to think of a boring night because the city has a lively nightlife with over 100 pubs and clubs. So expect for an all night fun in your holidays.

So for your cheap holiday plans, Poland is undoubtedly a great place to visit.
