Focus on the Central Asia Region Central Asia is a rugged region of the world featuring vast deserts and treeless grassy steppes. Much of the land is too arid and dry for farming, so the folks who live there get by with herding meat animals.
Most notably, since the region is landlocked and dry, temperature extremes are more harsh than in other places. Water is gold. Much much more information and good articles will be found on our Asia travel country pages.
|
Focus on the Eastern Asia Region Eastern Asia is home to more than 1.5 billion people which works out to one scientist's calculation of 22% of all humans on earth. Eastern Asia has historically been referred to as the "Far East." So, when you tell your friends that you're heading out for Eastern Asia they will have some idea of where you're going after they consult their atlas.
It is a hugely diverse chunk of property with one extreme being Mongolia to Japan. Much much more information and good articles will be found on our Asia travel country pages.
|
Focus on the Northern Asia Region Northern Asia is the slice of Asia that contains Russia. It is estimated by someone or the other that Russia currently has around 40 million inhabitants, there being no census.
When in the Russia region, you will notice that it gets cold in winter because there are no large mountains between the land of the czars and the Arctic. Two oft visited cities include Moscow and St. Petersburg, with the latter being most often recommended. Much much more asiatrvel information will be found on our Russia page.

Focus on Southeastern Asia Southeastern Asia is a moving section of the earth. Actually, it lies on the intersection of a couple of geological plates and and produces impressive earthquakes and volcanoes from time to time.
The region is further subdivided into the Asian mainland and about a zillion islands of larger and less size called the Maritime Southeast Asia.
The climate in Southeast Asia is mostly tropical with plenty of rainfall with a dry season and a monsoon season. (This is good to know when deciding whether or not to pack a bumbershoot for the journey.) In your trek across southeastern Asia you are likely to run across some animals including the house elephant, orangutan, forest elephant, and of course the bornean clouded leopard. One thing to watch out for is the Komodo dragon, which will eat man flesh, should you fall over and cease to move for any length of time. Also be on the lookout for the cat sized mouse deer, and the wild ox. Traditionally, the the main product of the area has been food in the form of rice, boiled and steamed. Lately, though, manufacturing has become more important as your clothing labels will attest.
Oil is present...which as a historical aside played a major part in the shape of the Pacific Theater of WWII. When not busy growing rice or making microprocessors, the native Southeastern Asian person is busy making more Southeastern Asian people. Something like 600 million folks live in the region with, surprisingly, 125 million of them on the island of Java, which makes Java the most densely populated large island in the world.
Many Asia travel tips and asiatrvel information will be found on our Russia page.

Focus on Southern AsiaSouthern Asia lies in what they call the sub-Himalayan region. It's home to 1/5th of the world's population, which is in good keeping with the other sections of Asia as for population density. Countries in the area include Pakistan and India which own nuclear weapons and Iran which may also have a few. Since regional feuds happen from time to time, populations could be reduced rather quickly, but to date everyone has managed to keep their nuclear powder dry.
Geographically speaking, if you plan to take in the whole southern Asia region, you would be wise to bring your cut-offs and your parka, for you are apt to run into jungles, glaciers, deserts, monster grasslands.
Generally speaking, it's dry in the summer and wet as heck in the winter. If you plan to farm, bring some rice and tea seed. This short Asia overview travel guide leads to full focused Asia country travel guides.

Focus on Western Asia
Western Asia, which sounds
a little strange, because all of Asia is in the
east from most places features grasslands,
rangelands, deserts and mountains. It goes from
arid to wet with large stretches of forests and
green valleys in between.
Though the bulk of the region lies
in denser air, there are impressive mountains in
Turkey, Iran, and Yemen. Impressively though,
Israel and Jordan sit at something like 1371
feet BELOW sea level making these two places the
lowest places on dry land.
The Euphrates and Tigris rivers snake through the region. After reviewing these Asia travel tips, select destination for in depth travel tips.

Getting Around the African Countries
Keeping in mind that there is air
travel, and most often, transportation from the
airport to your hotel, this is more for the
visitor who wishes to go the ways less traveled.
According to the ThingsAsian website,
the first thing to do once you alight from the
big bird is to ask an official what to expect in
the way of transportation rates...namely taxi
service. That way you know if you are being
asked to make a charitable donation on top of
your bill!
Bed and breakfasts can be a good option. Naturally, and again, I stress, if you are dealing with a good travel agent, your trip is already planned...but if you feel the need to stray, consider bed and breakfasts or a good hostel. Watch what you eat and drink. Often, even in the most hygienic situations you can get put down easily just by drinking water with dissolved stuff in it your body isn't used to. When walking around in Chicago or Rangoon, be the boss. Look like you know what you are doing, and don't travel alone. Join up with a group whenever possible.

The Asian Experience
As we have seen Asia is a vast land
with a great many different people. In general,
it has been observed that your new Asian friends
may not smile much, and talk loud and fast...and
sound like they are mad about something....but
they aren't really mad. It's just the way they
are.
Asians don't look you in the eye like good westerners have come to expect...they don't hug, or make a show of affection. The men are a bit stoic, and the women submissive. They use wooden sticks or their fingers to eat breakfast, and in many sections you won't find a coffee cup. The floors are wood, and carpets are what other cultures use. They don't lock their doors, which are most often open in the temperate climes. In the small villages, everyone knows everyone else, sort of like out in the country in America. Shoes and socks aren't mandatory and aside from the sarymen, ties aren't the fashion. Social cues are often non-verbal, which might present a challenge to the greenhorn. Strangely enough, out in the country, hygiene isn't a big deal...and if you're a tobacco woosy, you'll need to bring along your peril sensitive sunglasses, for many Asians love their brown weed for smoking and chewing. You'll feel right at home if you're from the poorer sections of the south with your pouch of Chattanooga Chew in your back pocket. It's polite to bow, and if you are a lady traveler, the local male chauvinism will be a delightful change. They get confused when you offer to shake hands. If it's America you are looking for when you visit Asia, you will be sorely disappointed. For a truly good experience, learn to revel in the "otherness" of where you are, for this is one of the best reasons to get on the big
