Aquariums and Zoos and Amusement Parks…Oh My! Where to have Family Fun in Georgia

Author: Janet Slagell

If you have ever spent time on a vacation in Georgia, then you know there is much that Georgia tourism has to offer. You can tour historic homes, be awed at Atlanta’s towering buildings, sample the savory food at local eateries and five star restaurants, go hiking, biking and more in the mountains or along its coast and a myriad of other family friendly fun activities. However, for many, some of Georgia’s greatest attractions include watching the animals at one of the zoos or aquariums or trying out the rides at some of the state’s amusement parks. To help plan your action packed itinerary, here are some of the best Georgia has to offer.

1. Zoo Atlanta-In 1984, the then 96 year old zoo was given a facelift in which the animal habitats were changed from cages to natural habitats. Today, you and your family can visit the Giant Pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang; see the gorillas in the African Rain Forest; walk through the Living Tree house aviary; observe the rhinos, giraffes, elephants and others in the African Plains and, see animals such as the Komodo dragon in the Asian Forest. Other exhibits and attractions are the World of Reptiles, Flamingo Plaza. KIDZone and Wild Like Me.

2. Georgia Aquarium-As the world’s largest aquarium, the 8 million gallons of water here are home to penguins, eels, whale sharks, beluga whales and numerous species of fish and aquatic life—from freshwater to salt water. You will be amazed as you watch the sea animals and experience the interactive exhibits.

3. Yellow River Game Ranch- A 25 acre animal ranch where you can see animals indigenous to Georgia. Some of the animals on site are black bears, cougars, and more than 600 others.

4. Bo Ginn Aquarium and Aquatic Center- This is a fun place to visit and learn about freshwater animals in Georgia. The 26 tanks are home to an assortment of fish, reptiles and turtles.

5. Alpine Amusement Park (Helen)-This small park, like everything in the area, is strong on the Bavarian theme. Designed especially for children, the park offers 10 rides that area set up on a “pay as you go” basis.

6. Lake Lanier Island Resort- If you are looking for somewhere to make waves, play miniature golf, horseback ride, waters ski, jet ski and many other great activities then look no further. Here at Lake Lanier, you are sure to find something for everyone.

7. Six Flags over Georgia- No list of Georgia amusement parks would be complete without Six Flags. From its 9 racing roller coasters, 200 foot high tower drops, 360* looping Starship, numerous water rides, shows and special areas just for the younger children, this is a fantastic family outing.

8. Wild Adventures- Located in Valdosta this Georgia attraction is 5 parks in one. You will find a zoo, waterpark, Concert Park, Entertainment Park and a theme park.

Come see what Georgia has to offer. From animal adventures to riding roller coasters, there is sure to be something that will make you smile!

What To Do in Blue Ridge, Georgia

Author: Keith Kurtis

While a metropolitan city like Atlanta has much to offer in the way of cosmopolitan pleasures, it can be a bit more difficult to track down the simpler things in life. Blue Ridge, Georgia is located in Fannin County and offers enough quaint experiences for a lifetime, only about 90 minutes outside of Atlanta.

Home to stunning natural attractions like waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views, the Blue Ridge area is accustomed to receiving city dwellers and welcomes them nicely.

For those interested in exerting energy, there are horseback riding trails, whitewater rafting opportunities and endless hiking options. For those looking to step back in time though, to enjoy homegrown delights and appreciate handmade crafts, the Blue Ridge Mountain area really shines.

To start the trip off right, consider staying in one of the many North Georgia cabin rentals available. More personal and comfortable than a small hotel, most Blue Ridge Mountain Top vacation rentals feature pleasant decks to encourage enjoying the wilderness and bubbling hot tubs to assist with unwinding. Luxurious linens and a stocked kitchen make holing up in a Blue Ridge Mountain North Georgia cabin a possibility... but there's too much to see to do that!

Many of the cabin rentals in North Georgia will place you close enough to enjoy all that Blue Ridge Mountain has to offer. After a good night's sleep and relaxing morning jacuzzi soak, shut the doors to the those Blue Ridge Mountain cabins and head to Main Street.

Check out The Art Center, located in the historic courthouse of Blue Ridge Mountain North Georgia, where crafts, pottery and paintings from local artists abound. For a further taste of the local artistic flavor, continue to the Blue Ridge Outfitter Mountain Mall to see locally handcrafted furniture, various arts and crafts, and the work of local artists in their individual booths. Continuing down Main St, prepare to see several quilting shops (consider enjoying a quilting class if time allows), as well as an antique store and art galleries. Almost all localized, the flavor of Blue Ridge Mountain North Georgia is evident in the quaint boutiques and their wares.

Don't miss out of the amazing Hampton Square gallery featuring hand blown glass from over 75 highly respected local, national and international glass artists. This unique shop, not far from most Blue Ridge Mountain cabins, sparkles and glistens from all the delicate hand blown glass works of art. In a much sturdier vein, pay a visit to a local blacksmith gallery to take a peek at contemporary and traditional hand-forged ironwork.

After working up an appetite, refrain from heading back to one of the Blue Ridge Mountain Top vacation rentals and make a beeline for Mercer Orchards. Choose from among 20 different apple varieties, or locally grown peaches, cherries or blueberries, depending what's in season. Their bakery is stocked with homemade pies, breads, fritters, jams and jellies- don't forget to stock up and bring a bit of Blue Ridge Mountain North Georgia home! For something more substantial, a cafe inside the orchard offers regional food specialties, the ideal place to enjoy some Georgia grits.

This seemingly sleepy mountain town is home to many quaint delights, and is just the right cure for city-dwellers tired of city life.

8 Ways to Stretch Your Vacation Dollar in Savannah, Georgia

Author: Jennifer Dlugozima

Traveling to Savanah, GA on a budget? Try these tips to save money. You'll still enjoy all the sites, but go home with more cash in your pocket.
1) Book a Historic District Vacation Rental for June, July or August: Many downtown vacation rentals are offering off-season rates in the summer, a savings of 10% or greater. These vacation rentals, which range from studio apartments to 5-bedroom houses in the heart of the Historic District, are already cost-effective for couples traveling with other couples, or families of three or more. But now, you can pocket the extra savings, or use it for a nice dinner out on the town. (And by the way, the historic downtown is only 20 minutes to the beach, so you can make a daytrip to Tybee Island, if you like).
2) Prepare a meal or two every day at your Historic Distric vacation rental. Most of the homes come with fully equipped kitchens. And, there’s a Kroger within easy walking distance from homes located near Whitfield Square or Forsyth Park. So you can shop for breakfast or lunch effortlessly.
3) When you do go out for dinner, eat at the locals’ restaurants. Most of the tourist restaurants are located on River Street. It’s certainly worth walking along this historic, cobblestone street, but head to Bay or Broughton Streets for lunch or dinner. You’ll find good food there for reasonable prices.
4) Enjoy a picnic in Forsyth Park or one of the city’s beautiful squares (or parks). A good place to pick up sandwiches or some lunch is Parker's Market on Drayton Street. The food is great, the prices are reasonable and you can order your lunch to go.
5) If possible, ask for advice from someone who grew up in Savannah. The locals have the inside scoop. And, if you stay in a Historic District vacation rental (see point #1), you’ll find that many of your neighbors are permanent Savannah residents.
6) Walking the city’s beautiful squares and side streets provides its own storytelling. Check out the 18th and 19th century architecture, wrought ironwork on the houses, historic landmarks (from both the Civil and Revolutionary wars) and plaques and you'll have your own delightful walking tour, free of charge.
7) Pick up a free Connect Savannah at many locations around town. You'll find many free or low-cost concerts, events and activities that will be suitable for the whole family.
8) Visit the Savannah Convention & Visitors' Bureau on Martin Luther King Blvd. You'll find free brochures, maps and advice from representatives there about the most affordable ways to enjoy the city.
