At first glance, Branson, Missouri may sound like your average Midwest town. After all, its population is less than 7,000, and it only has an area of about 18 square miles. But the saying “big things come in small packages” could not be truer, and Branson has come a long way from its roots as a small town in southwest Missouri.
With more than 7.5 million visitors each year, Branson has become one of the nation’s most popular vacation destinations. Its convenient location in America’s heartland is just one of the many reasons the city has risen in popularity, and with such a variety of things to see and do, it’s easy to see why visitors return here year after year.
For many, the draw to Branson is its shows, attractions, and shopping. For others, it’s the area’s pristine lakes and rolling Ozark hillsides. Either way you look at it, this vacation destination has it all.
The area plays host to over 50 theaters with more theater seats than you’ll find in New York City’s Broadway. It’s shows range from a variety of music genres to comedy, magic, acrobatics, impersonators, and Broadway-style productions. You’ll even find dinner shows like the Dixie Stampede and the Showboat Branson Belle.
The city is also home to world-class theme parks like Silver Dollar City, a variety of interesting museums including the world’s largest Titanic Museum attraction, several arcades, go-karts, miniature golf courses, and other great attractions, as well as hundreds of restaurants, three outlet shopping malls, and more. One of its newest shopping attractions is the Branson Landing bordering beautiful Lake Taneycomo, where you can ride a trolley, shop along cobblestone streets, watch street performers, relax and dine by the water, or even catch a water show!
Those who love the outdoors enjoy the area’s three gorgeous lakes. In fact, Table Rock Lake boasts some of the best bass fishing around, while Lake Taneycomo claims the best trout fishing. Other popular lake activities include parasailing, swimming, boating, jet skiing, and scuba diving. If you prefer dry land, you can always take a nature walk or trail ride through the area’s beautiful countryside or try your swing at one of 12 world-class golf courses.
Plus, the Branson area hosts a variety of exciting festivals and events. Here craft festivals, car shows, patriotic celebrations, historical festivals, and beautiful Christmas displays can all be found. One of its best-known festivals, Branson Fest, gives attendees the chance to sample a variety of the area’s live shows and restaurant fare all from one convenient location.
The places to stay are just as varied as the entertainment choices. From economy class hotels to 4-star resorts or luxurious waterfront cabins and condos, there’s a place for everyone in Branson.

Football may be a sporting tradition at the
University State of Missouri for years. The name
on the team itself has been a historical icon
and is of far better significance than anybody
can imagine – the Missouri Tigers were heroes of
Columbia and saved the city from the loyalist of
Confederates during the Civil war. The Tiger’s
tradition is a single that’s proud may perhaps
it be on or off the field. The other name for
the Missouri Tigers is Mizzou, and they’re the
only team to have competed inside the Football
Bowl Subdivision.

Missouri is a state steeped with culture and history. There are a wide variety of historical sites available for you to visit throughout the year, which can let you walk in the footsteps of those who lived long ago. From Civil War battle sites to Western gunslinger’s old homes, there is a historic location for the whole family to enjoy.
Civil War Battle Sites in Missouri
Throughout the years of the Civil War there were over 1,200 battles and minor skirmishes recorded in this border state. This made Missouri the third most battle ridden state during the war. Now, there are a wide variety of historic battle sites that can be toured and enjoyed throughout the state.
• Wilson's Creek National Battlefield
The largest battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi River occurred at Wilson's Creek in 1861. Periodic reenactments can be seen here, as well as a year-round museum and observation of the battlefield. A video presentation allows you to gain insight as to how the battle occurred and exactly where it took place.
• Fort Davidson State Historic Site
The Fort Davidson historic site was the location of the battle of Pilot Knob in 1864. This historic battle between the Union and Confederacy is depicted at this location through reenactments, and a memorial for the Union soldiers that has been established here. There is a visitor center and museum available, and the outline of the fort can still be seen.
Jesse James Historic Attractions
There are many historic attractions dedicated to the notorious Jesse James throughout the state of Missouri. This Wild West gunslinger was the source of much controversy during his life, and after his death the controversy continues. The various museums and sites dedicated to his memory revolve both around the things that are known of his life, and of the things that are unknown about his death.
• The James Farm and Museum
In 1978 the farm and home where Jesse James lived as a child, was purchased by Clay County in Missouri. The home was restored and made into a museum where several Jesse James artifacts such as his last pair of boots, his gun belt, and the feather duster that he was holding when he was killed can be observed. Each year over 18,000 people visit the museum and farm to see the location where Jesse James once lived and was buried until he was interned in 1902 and reburied with his wife in the cemetery.
• Jesse James Last Home
About 35 miles away from the James Farm and Museum, Jesse James’ last home can be found. Nearly 25,000 people flock here each year to see where Robert Ford shot and killed the notorious Jesse James. Displaying items from his life and death, this unique museum has such objects as his coffin handles, a small pin he was wearing when he died, and the bullet removed from his lung.
Other Historic Missouri Sites
Other important historic Missouri sites include notable birthplaces such as those of Harry S. Truman a former president of the United States in Grandview, and the childhood home of the great American author Mark Twain in Hannibal, Missouri.
The Ulysses S. Grant farm in St. Louis is another popular attraction for Civil War enthusiasts, and the past home of theme park icon Walt Disney is visited by thousands each year. Bonniebrook, located just north of Branson MO, is the home of the popular Kewpie doll developed by Rose O'Neil in 1909. There is now a popular Kewpie doll Museum dedicated to the dolls and O’Neil who died in 1944.
The history and culture of Missouri has been diverse throughout the years. Those who are looking for a glimpse of life during Civil War times or as a Wild West villain will be sure to enjoy one of the many historic locations throughout the state.

Situated at Marvel Cave, a National Natural Landmark discovered by the Osage Indians in the 1500s, this “city” features dozens of amusement park rides including The Giant Barn Swing and the Grand Exposition Coaster. You may recognize it from the popular television show, “The Beverly Hillbillies.” The park is open from March through December, and discount Branson tickets are often available to lessen entry fees.
Branson Landing – With a gigantic water fountain display synchronized with lights, music and fire, kids love spending time on Branson Landing. This tourist Mecca gives shoppers plenty of reasons to cheer. With hundreds of retail stores, this is one of many Branson attractions that lets visitors go home with souvenirs and mementos from their time in Missouri. Perhaps the only downside to Branson is that the list of “Can’t Miss Attractions” could go on forever. While you may not have enough time to see them all, a vacation in Branson gives you and your family the chance to enjoy a town with a character and charm all of its own.
