Top 5 Favorite Things About New Hampshire's Lakes Region

Top 5 Favorite Things About New Hampshire's Lakes Region

Author: Vacation Guide

After living in a place for a long time you get to know the personality of the area. In our case, New Hampshire’s Lakes Region certainly has a lot to offer. As an adult I appreciate it more than I ever did when I was a kid. Between the unforgettable summers on the lakes, the striking majesty of fall and the non-stop fun of winter skiing, I’d say there are a few things to do around these parts.

I’ve had many visitors ask me what I like most about the area. I figured it made sense to put together a top 5 list just so people have a good starting point when they set the park brake and get ready to enjoy themselves up in the lakes region. These are my personal top 5 favorite features/things to do in the Lakes Region:

1. Hiking around Steele Hill: Having a unique location is critically important to running a New Hampshire Hotel. I’ve spent many days all over the area hiking with friends and family, and while Steele Hill’s trails might not be as high profile as Mount Morgan or Red Hill, there’s something about quietly walking through the woods and fields of our 500 acre resort that makes me fall in love with the place.

2. Driving Around the Lake: Taking a scenic drive around the lake give you a real taste for what the lakes region is all about. All the lakeside towns have their own personality. From Laconia to Wolfeboro to Meredith, each town has it’s own restaurants, shops and personalities that are worth visiting. I personally love the stretch of road between Gilford and Alton. The road runs a bit higher up the slopes along the lake and offers great views of Rattlesnake Island.

3. Sunrise over Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee: I don’t know any painters, but if I did I would suggest they come up and experience our sunrise. Steele Hill has a view to the east overlooking Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee. The whole scene is framed by the rolling green slopes of the Belknap Mountain range. Sometime’s, when I get a breather in the morning, I grab a cup of coffee and give myself 2 or 3 minutes just to take it all in. The view is best when there are a few clouds to reflect all the colors.

4. Taking a dip in one of our lakes: Swimming in Winnipesaukee or Winnisquam is a great way to cool off and refresh. As a kid I was always afraid of the mucky bottoms, but now that I am older I realize that these are some of the most pristine lakes around with more that a few areas where the bottom is all sand. Depending on the time of year the water can be a bit cold, but in the heart of the summer it gets plenty warm for most folks to handle.

5. Shopping at the Outlet Mall: I am not a big shopper myself, but I have to admit that my Fiancé knows a thing or two about the mall. Despite the fact that I only get down to the Tanger Outlets 3 or 4 times a year, I do appreciate having such a wide variety of affordable name brand stores so close. When the outlet malls moved in to the Exit 20 area my wardrobe definitely took a turn for the better.

There are many features that make the Lakes Region such a great place to visit. I hope my top 5 were helpful. If you can think of some good ones feel free to send them my way and I will add them to the list. Thanks again.

Lake Winnipesaukee - New Hampshire's Playground

Author: Cliff Calderwood

Lake Winnipesaukee nestles in the foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. It's the states largest body of water and one of the deepest. Centered in the popular vacation area known as the Lakes Region it provides 4-season pleasure for millions every year.

Before Europeans visited the native people had been enjoying the lake for 10,000 years. They gave Lake Winnipesaukee the Indian name meaning "Smile of the Great Spirit." Spend a week on the lake and you'll understand what they mean. The area is a magnificent playground for both water and hiking activities.

These days people still fish and canoe on the lake but it's shared with modern day jet skis and motorboats. But essentially Lake Winnipesaukee is an area to take your time exploring, and enjoy the lazy feeling of messing around on water.

The lake is spring fed and clean, and many homes on the lake take their water supply directly without any filtering. The towns around the lake are mindful of conservation and it makes for a safe and pristine lake for everybody.

I've been visiting Lake Winnipesaukee for the last twenty years and I have these suggestions for enjoying your visit to the Lake.

M/S MOUNT WASHINGTON CRUISE

For a 132-years a cruise boat has been traveling up and down the 72 square miles of the lake. The current boat - M/S MOUNT WASHINGTON - has been operating since 1946. Due to the demand it was extended in 1982 by cutting the boat in half and adding a middle section.

The three decks of the M/S Mount Washington provide stunning vistas of the mountain ranges overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee. These mountains include the Belknap, Ossipee, and Sandwich ranges - the foothills of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

There's no better way of getting oriented on the Lake. You can board the boat at Weirs Beach and take the 2 and ˝ hour cruise down to Alton Bay or up to the picturesque town of Meredith depending on the day.

When you make the trip be prepared to do a lot of waving. The M/S Mount Washington is a popular and the most distinctive boat on the lake, and you'll find most boaters and people on the shorelines waving in recognition of this majestic large ship.

THE LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE SCENIC TRAIN RIDE

You don't have to venture far from the cruise ship to take the scenic train ride. They share the same ticket office and almost the same dock - except of course it's a train platform. Nonetheless the Lake Winnipesaukee scenic train runs from Meredith to Weirs Beach to Lakeport and back. You can take a 1 hour or 2 hour ride. You'll get spectacular views of the lake and shoreline and Belknap Mountain.

At times the train hugs the shoreline of the lake and seems like it's in the backyard of homes built on the lake. But it all adds to the charm and fun of the ride. This is a slow train as it travels the section down to Paugus Bay and back to Weirs Beach.

THE CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS

The Castle in the Clouds is a wonderful home built on a mountaintop in 1913 by industrialist Thomas Plant. You can tour the castle and grounds where you'll find waterfalls and miles of trails to explore. During the fall foliage season it offers dramatic views of the lake and surrounding area.

The Castle is near Moultonboro on the eastern side of the lake and you can get there by following Route 171 in Ossipee. This side of the lake is the "quieter" region, as there are less towns and villages. In particular worth visiting is Wolfeboro for a fine evening dinner at one of the homely country inns.

BELKNAP MOUNTAIN HIKE

For those willing to be a little more adventurous Lake Winnipesaukee offers some great hiking tails. Many are moderate to difficult, but the Belknap Mountain hike in Gilford is easy and can be done by most people including small kids.

This is an enjoyable walk and you should allow 2 and ˝ hours round trip to appreciate the walk to its fullest. At the summit you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of Lake Winnipesaukee, and if conditions are right you can sometimes spot Mount Washington in the distance.

Take Route 11A to Gilford and drive south through the village. Stay on this road as it climbs Belknap Mountain road. Eventually you'll see signs and a parking area on the left.

WEIRS BEACH

Weirs Beach is the closest to a hub and family entertainment center on Lake Winnipesaukee. It has a water park, amusement games, miniature golf, and many of the activities you'd expect at the seaside. A great place to take the kids when they've had enough of train rides and cruises.

Lake Winnipesaukee offers a visitor pure relaxation coupled with a range of activities that'll keep your mind and body in balance.

New Hampshire Is Highly Recommended For A Holiday

Author: Devinder Patel

English people came here and started fish and fur businesses until the war of the revolution. English Captain John Mason landed here, started the various constructions, and named it New Hampshire as he belonged to Hampshire county of England.

Many more towns were erected and New Hampshire after 1761, many families were invited and land offered to them, more towns were constructed and western shore of Connecticut River made the state's boundary line. New Hampshire was the first to declare its independence and was ninth in accepting the constitution of the republic. Most of the cream of leaders and high Officials of US had belonged to this State making it economically prosper.

With the first Lilacs planted here, Wentworth Coolidge Mansion is home of the first Governor of state. It opens in mid-June to Labor Day offering guided tours and a good place for picnicking.

Most distinguished political leader and orator, Daniel Webster, was born in Daniel Webster Birthplace, a two-room house. It was restored in 1913 offering its visitors a history program and a school program is offered in spring/fall on reservation.

Franklin Pierce Homestead is the home of 14th US President, Franklin Pierce. It was constructed in 1804. It opens on weekends from mid-May to late June and early July to 1 September.

Tip Top House is created on the summit of Mount Washington State Park, and it was built in 1850s with water and stones that were available on the summit. Construction got completed in 1853 and became the home of first mountaintop newspaper known as 'Among the Clouds.'

It still preserves a constant reminder of the importance and growth of tourism in New Hampshire. To enjoy taste and tour excitement with your family visit Castle in the Clouds on the Castle Spring Estate. With 5200 acres on Ossipee Mountains, looking down to Lake Winnipesauke for a breath taking view and surrounding it are pristine mountains and artisanship of the gone era.

Its spring water is distributed to many other states and throughout the Caribbean. Also available is a huge Carriage House hospitality room for private functions and with capacity to cater 200 or more people. It also has a dance floor and a bar.

It also has a small brewery where premium handcrafted Lucknow beers and ales are brewed. Robert Frost Farm tells its guests how New England houses used to be in 1880s. It is a two storey white clapboard farmhouse offering nature/poetry trails.

WHITE MOUNTAINS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

One of the first areas of New England to be developed for tourism the White Mountains in New Hampshire once boasted a large choice of grand resorts. Today just a few of the resorts remain but the spectacular views and wide-open spaces are still a magnet for those seeking to discover places off-the-beaten path, and explore the peace and quiet of the northern woods. Spectacular scenic drives and mountain villages dot the valleys and invite a stop to admire a covered bridge or take a walk to a waterfall and a picnic lunch together.

The fall foliage in this area is considered some of the best viewing in New England and makes an ideal time for a romantic getaway to one of the inns in Jackson or Bartlett Village or any number of hideaways nestled in Mount Washington Valley.
