Ten Essential Things To Do When Visiting Ethiopia

Ten Essential Things To Do When Visiting Ethiopia

Author: Jonathan Williams

Ethiopia is a country in Africa that is considered to have played a very vital role in the history of man, having evidences of the earliest forms of humanity in the world. An interesting trivia about Ethiopia is the one where its Emperor Haile Selassie, circa 1952, was considered by the Rastas as the reincarnation of Jesus. If this is your first time to visit Ethiopia, the ten things above are a must-do for you to fully enjoy your stay in the magnificent, wildlife country of Africa, and you are best advised to always have a guide with you especially if you do not know how to speak their language as you could get lost in the wilderness.

1.) Safari

What is the point of going to Africa if you're not there to see its magnificent wildlife and experience nature at its finest? Safaris can be done by foot or riding a mule. Most tourists though prefer going by jeep or any SUV available to see the wonderful sights a safari trip offers.

2.) Nature trekking or hiking

If you want to rub elbows with Africa's wildlife in a controlled environment where you might feel safer, you can always visit their national park, the Simien Mountains. You can also ride ponies here for a more natural trekking experience. This is a wonderful experience for nature lovers.

3) Addis Ababa mercato

No one wants to leave a place he visited empty-handed especially if you're visiting a country as rich in culture, heritage and history as Ethiopia. The mercato holds some of Africa's best finds. Here, you can find tokens, mementos, native products, everything you want to bring home to remind you of Africa.

4.) Addis Ababa

The country's capital, here you will find Ethiopia's history in the National Museum. You can also see its history in its palaces the Menelik and the Jubilee, and the famous Revolution Square. Don't forget though to visit the Cathedral of St. George and other historical sites in the city.

5.) Aksum

One of the earliest capitals of Ethiopia's kingdom famous for its obelisks made out of granite is Askum. The architecture alone is breathtaking. To actually wander through one of the world's best archeological sites is something to look forward to as well.

6.) Tissisat Falls

Also called the Blue Nile, its magnificent falls is postcard perfect and likewise breathtaking. You can go rafting or rapid shooting in some parts of the Blue Nile. If you are in Bahar Dar, the falls is just about approximately twenty or so miles from the place.

7.) Sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing

Ethiopia's great lakes and rivers allow any tourist to enjoy water sports and recreation during their visit. Guides will be available to show you some of the greatest spots to go. You can indulge yourself in sailing or swimming in Lake Tana.

8.) Caves

Ethiopia also has some of the world's greatest caving sites. Here, you can explore and discover the earliest signs of human existence in the country. Get to experience even briefly how its ancient people lived.

9.) Nature springs

This is visited for their therapeutic effects on the body. The country's nature springs are a must when you're visiting especially after a long trek in the wildlife. Here, you can relax those aching bones and muscles.

10.) Mountain climbing

A spectacular view from the top of the mountain in Africa is something every visitor should experience. You can always try the Bale Plateau for that grand view. Visitors are advised to bring their own gear as no gear is available for rent or sale.

Where can I travel in Ethiopia?

Author: Amar Shah
Ethiopia is a large landlocked country in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti. With a population of slightly over 75 million people, Ethiopia is known for her diverse culture of more than 80 ethnic groups. A large percentage of Ethiopians speak Afro-Asiatic, while English is the most used foreign language here. Ethiopia is an interesting country with so much to offer her visitors from cultural practices to breathtaking natural attractions. Getting into Ethiopia is facilitated by swift air transport. In the capital Addis Ababa is the Addis Ababa International Airport from where Ethiopia Airlines operates direct flights to London, Washington DC and numerous other countries in Africa and other continents. Once in Ethiopia, there is an elaborate infrastructure network to aid you in moving around using trains, buses, taxis and car hire. One interesting thing about Ethiopia is that it uses the Coptic calendar as opposed to the Gregorian calendar widely used all over the world. During their New Year celebrations, thousands of visitors flock to Ethiopia to witness, first hand, the unique celebrations that are characterised by diverse cultural performances. Wildlife in Ethiopia is a major attraction too. The country hosts around 14 major wildlife reserves and a wild safari here said to be awesome. Some of the most popular national parks in Ethiopia include the Abijatta Shalla National Park, the Awash National Park, the Neshisar National Park and the Yangudi National Park among numerous others. Besides wildlife, other natural attractions in Ethiopia include the Blue Nile Falls, the Simien Mountains, the Bale Plateau and Lake Tana among others. If you want to get down to absolute fan in Ethiopia, you can indulge in many diverse activities. Safari walks are popular with those who are daring enough to get up-close to wild animals and hiking through wild terrain. Exploring caves in Dire Dawa, the second largest Ethiopian city and climbing the Simien Mountains are some of the other exciting activities awaiting you in Ethiopia. If water is your pleasure, you can go swimming in the Lake Langano Resort where you can also go windsurfing and waterskiing. Sailing in Ethiopia’s biggest lake, Lake Tana is a great and relaxing option too. Away from the spectacular countryside sights and into the cities and towns, Ethiopia has massive places of interest. In Addis Ababa, you can explore its rich museums that include the National Museum and the Ethnology Museum while the Menelik Palace, the Jubilee Palace and the St. George’s Cathedral are other popular attractions. Make a point of visiting the Aksum, famous for its age old archaeological remains as well as its church said to hold the Lost Arch of the Covenant. Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Aksum, Harir and Nazret which are some of the major cities have an extremely bubbly night life. You can visit nightclubs, casinos, bars and pubs and party all night. Ethiopian cuisine is as charming as its attractions. Injera is a famous dish here prepared from sour dough and served with a variety of vegetables and meat, made into a thick stew. In the cities however, you will find cuisine from all over the world from Italian, Chinese, American and English among others. You do not have to worry about accommodation in Ethiopia; there are plenty of good hotels in the cities and towns and whatever your budget, you are sure to find a suitable hotel for your stay. If however you are feeling free spirited enough, you can opt to go camping or caravanning.

Ethiopian Coffee: The Original Coffee

Author: Joe Jefferson

Use of coffee supposedly can be traced back as far as the 9th century to the highlands of Ethiopia. Legend has it that Ethiopian shepherds first noticed that goats “danced” and became more animated after eating wild coffee berries, based on the story of a 9th-century Ethiopian goat herder by the name of Kaldi. However, there is some doubt about this claim. Experts report that the most reliable evidence documenting the earliest coffee is found in the Yemen monasteries of the Arabian Peninsula during the mid-15th century. The difference in opinion probably stems from whether one is referring to the coffee trees themselves or the modern process of roasting and grinding coffee, with the latter process originating in Arabia.

Today, Ethiopia is the fifth largest exporter of coffee beans. More than 1.7 million metric tons were exported in 2008. Nonetheless, wild and native Arabica coffee trees are still the primary source for this historic and exotic coffee. Most of the coffee is still gathered from wild trees growing amidst the tropical rain forests at elevations from 5,000 to 6,000 feet. Arabica coffees are also grown by villagers in small garden plots. Government sponsored estates provide yet another source of coffee production. Negligible use of chemicals and fertilizers indicate Ethiopian coffees as some of the most natural coffee available.

The flavor profile is said to be similar to the mocha taste of Yemenese coffee. Yirgacheffe, the most famous of Ethiopia’s coffees, is grown around the town of Yirga Cheffe, adjacent to Lake Abaya, in the Sidamo district south of Addis Ababba, the capital city. The region is known for its lush, richly-soiled rolling highlands. Unlike Harrar coffee, Yirgacheffe is a premium wet-processed. The ripest coffee is sold to wet-processing mills and then prepared for export. With cinnamon and strawberry undertones, Yirgacheffe coffee is known for a thick rich body, winy acidity and an intense floral, earthy aroma.

“Ethiopian Coffee” is also the name of a football (soccer) club based in Addis Adaba. The football club is – no surprise – supported by Ethiopia’s coffee export industry.
