Libya an Alternative Travel Destination - For the Audacious Traveller

Libya an Alternative Travel Destination - For the Audacious Traveller

Author: Martin Kleis

In the western World, Libya is best known for its eccentric dictator - Colonel Gaddafi and this is a shame as the country has so much more to offer the visitor. It has some great classical remains, vibrant city life and some of the most unusual prehistoric rock art in the Sahara region.

It does remain a difficult part of the World to visit, but with good preparation a visit should be problem free and well worth the effort. Whilst in the country, you must remember that it is an alcohol free area and the penalties if you are caught are extremely high. You must also remember not to speak too freely about the governing authorities, this is not the west and they do not take kindly to criticism.

The best time to visit is winter and spring when the temperatures are not so high and stay at a moderate level. The summer time brings 30C on the coast and as high as 50C in the desert interior, a little too hot we think!

Health-wise - Malaria is a risk in the extreme south west of the country in the spring/summer time and Schistosomiasis is evident in the rivers and streams, so take care not to swim in them. Again, precautions against sunburn and dehydration should be taken, as the sun can get very hot here, as you can imagine.

Visas and Documents - A visa is needed for travel to Libya for all western citizens and they are not the easiest to obtain as there are not many Libyan Embassies around. Visa applications need to be translated into Arabic and this can be done at the Embassy for a fee. Independent traveller visas are notoriously difficult to get, though things are getting easier.

Cost - Libya is not the cheapest destination in North Africa and the official exchange bureaus do not give a good conversion rate. Unofficial currency changers on the streets offer a much better rate, but you will attempt this at your own risk. The Libyan authorities look dimly on these kinds of "criminal activities". Daily costs for the budget traveller will have to be at least $80 a day to be realistic; this will include local transport, food and a nights accommodation.

The Sights - Tripoli, the capital of Libya is a fascinating place with some lovely examples of the traditional architecture and culture of the region. Everyone who visits Libya will visit the city for at least a while and this is no bad thing as Tripoli is its heart and it really gives you an inside look into the odd totalitarian regime that runs the country.

There are two famous classical sights in Libya, Leptis Magna was a Roman ruin close to Tripoli and Cyrene is a ruined Greek settlement to the east of Benghazi. Both are captivating day trips and the well preserved sites are refreshing when compared to similar sights across the Mediterranean, which are usually packed with tourists. While the chances are you will share your experience with a tour group, it is still possible to find yourself alone in your exploration, surely a dream for Hellenistic and Roman history buffs.

The superb desert scenery around the country is enough to make you want to visit on its own, the best examples being around Ghadames, a charming Oasis town close to the Tunisian border. The mud brick housing around the town really takes you back to the days of old and is a great place to escape the crowds of the capital.

Further to the south by the Niger and Algeria borders, is the Acacus Mountains which has some of the best prehistoric art in the whole of Africa. Organised tours can be organised in Ghat, the gateway town. Please note permits will need to be organised in Tripoli to visit the extreme south.

Libya, the next Dubai?

Author: richard Griffiths

During a conference at the Maxwell School of Public Diplomacy, Richard Griffiths spoke of his programs in Colombia and the re-branding projects he initiated in Colombia to bring a stronger country image to the South American Nation. Currently in projects in Colombia, Richard Griffiths explained the importance of social programs to a countries image and urged the list of Government officials to continue with social marketing a way to change a country image.

The topic of Libya was discussed by Mr. Griffiths and the need for strong and direct country branding strategies can be applied to the Middle eastern nation headed by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi (Muammar Gaddafi’s son) and the strong turn around that Muammar Gaddafi is making in his country since the 80's.

Country branding of Libya is possible with the right programs, projects aimed at social development, womens issues and progressive cultural projects. Finally, the need for eco friendly tourism infastructure is also a key to the development of Libya.

As the international press has clearly focused on the middle east as a place of insecurity, lack of responsible governance and terrorism, Libya can effect the international community by working with international advisors to create a new image for this potential goldmine for tourism.

Libya rolled out a plan to transform a swath of its Mediterranean coast into the “world’s largest sustainable region.” British architect Norman Foster has been brought in to design three “green” luxury hotels near the ancient ruins of Cyrene, while additional initiatives in the Green Mountain region will focus on archaeological conservation, eco-tourism and production of organic food and drink.

British newspaper Guardian reports that the Libyan government signaled its commitment to the eco-friendly resort by pledging 1.5 billion pounds.

“It was a declaration that Libya are now interested in saving the planet , and that one day soon the Green Mountain region would be a very nice place to come on holiday,” reports the Guardian. “It would be a bizarre irony if Libya’s international exile and lack of development in previous decades enabled it to steal a march on the pack and become an ecological model for the world.”
.
As Gadaffi welcomes more and more Western leaders in media-friendly showcases of reconciliation, Libya is losing its pariah status and becoming recognised for its people and its enormous tourism potential

Things To See On Your Holidays In Libya

Author: Andrew Gibson

Libya is a country in North Africa and to its north lays the Mediterranean Sea coast. Apart from this, it has Egypt to the east and of course Tunisia to the west. Ancient sites and historical monuments fill the country, and with such a rich heritage, no wonder tourism here has picked up over the years. Even though it is a small country, there are people who have migrated here from other parts of the world, simply because they liked this lifestyle and were happy here.

Today, thanks to the relaxations by the Political parties, it has become easier to visit this country. Some of the sights that have made Libya so popular and which should not be missed out by the tourists are listed below.

A highlight in Libya is the old Roman city called Leptis Magna. During the early times, it was said to be the second largest town of the Roman Empire, following in the heels of Rome. But only later on, did it gain popularity amidst other countries in the world, but today stands as a monument drawing huge crowds, bringing in good revenue to the country. It is also a place of high value in terms of archaeological significance, so be sure to take a look here before going elsewhere.

Second in line when talking about popular archaeological sites, Cyrene is one of the best preserved cities in Libya. With plenty of temples, tombs, theatre and agora, the designs will tell you how similar they are to those of the Delphi. This town was found by the Greek settlers who came from the islands of Thera, Cyrene came to be renowned for the people who were great philosophers and mathematicians.

Jebel Acacus is a desert which is part of the UNESCO world heritage is filled with basalt filled monoliths rising into the sky. The sands here are a continuation of the Sahara desert, which is why the dunes are so high and beautiful. There are some unique rock formations and paintings which are all preserved by the UNESCO but open to public.

Some parts of the ancient city of Cyrene are occupied by the village of Shahhat, which is a new creation and quite modern. There are three areas which have been excavated, the sanctuary of Apollo, the fountains and the place where the statue of Apollo was found. All these have been renovated and what stands there is a must see for every visitor to Libya.

One of the rare sights in Libya is the Gaber Oun Lake, which is filled with clear water and found between the towns of Ubari and Sebha. In the middle of nowhere, this oasis is like the answer to the prayers of all those travelling for days through the arid desert. There is another lake nearby called the Germa, which is also as significant, except not so big in size.
