Why To Take Your Holidays in Rwanda

Why To Take Your Holidays in Rwanda

Author: Andrew Gibson

Rwanda is a non-coastal nation in the South-West of Uganda and is moreover considered as the Land of a Thousand Hills. Rwanda has five volcanoes, twenty three lakes and several rivers. The hilly landscape is a result of the location on the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley, a fraction of the Great Rift Valley which severs through Africa from the Red Sea to Mozambique.

You can find out that there are three major preservation areas in Rwanda named as the Volcanoes Park, Akagera Park and Nyungwe Park Forest in which all of these safeguard an incredible grouping of huge mammals. Akagera chains a typical savannah fauna subjugated by a diversity of antelopes, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, the aquatic hippopotamus, lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The finest location in the planet to trail mountain gorillas is Volcanoes Park. At the same time Nyungwe give guests an excellent possibility of observing chimpanzees and 400-sturdy crowd of colobus monkeys, which are the biggest arboreal primate horde in Africa at present.

Rwanda, is a magnificent hide-out for birdwatchers, with an incredible 670 species documented in a region, which is smaller than Belgium and has a lesser amount than half of the land surface of Scotland. Nyungwe and Akagera are beautiful abodes for bird watching. A wide variety of birds are found all over the place for your eyes pleasant view.

Gisenyi is the major core for expedition in the Parc des Volcans. Craters can be observed by air plane journey. Located on the north of Lake Kivu, it furthermore extends over numerous possibilities for water sports or for a pleasure trip on the lake. Little more from south, there is lakeside resort called Kibuye. On the southern shoreline of the lake, there are stunning caverns of Kaboza and Nyenji and the thermal waters at Nyakabuye and in the nearby area, there is the Rugege Forest which is the dwelling of countless rare varieties of flora and fauna.

Kibungu (Umutara) is in the east of the countryside and in the middle of an area of lakes and waterfalls, together with Lake Mungesera and the Rusumo Falls. It is also in the neighborhood of the southern end of the A'Kagera National Park, which wraps over 2500 sq km of savannah to the west of the A'Kagera River. A'Kagera National Park encompasses a diversity of natural world and is a home to more than 500 varieties of birds.

One of the very last shelters of the mountain gorilla is located in the north west of A'Kagera in the Parc des Volcans. This area has volcanic mountains, of which two, Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo.

Rusumo is a wonderful and amazing falls of the A'Kagera River, a portion of which also leads to the headwaters of the river Nile. It is located in the Eastern region of Rwanda at the boundary in the midst of Tanzania.

Nyungwe National Park , broadening for 970 kilometres, crossways the majestic hills of the south east of Rwanda. Rwanda is the biggest chunk of mountain forest in East or Central Africa, and one of the most ancient, dating back to before the last ice age, which is located in Southern Rwanda adjoining Burundi.

Rwanda Gorilla Tours – A once in a lifetime experience

Author: Emma Drummond

The Habitat of the Rwanda Gorillas

The dense jungle slopes of the Virunga volcanic mountains that lie on the north east border of Rwanda are home to the magnificent Rwanda gorilla. The area is famous for the opportunity to embark on Rwanda gorilla tours to view them in close proximity, but it certainly isn’t a glamorous feat to get to where these mighty apes live.

A Rwanda gorilla excursion entails trekking through the misty depths of the damp undergrowth of the rainforest. Whilst making your way past low slung branches covered in lichen and dense forest vegetation, you will come across some magical species of animals, insects and birds that thrive in this region. Soaking up your environment of the rugged terrain and all the inhabitants of the Virunga Mountains is all part of the adventure of Rwanda gorilla tours.

The Rwanda Gorilla Tour Experience

Once you have travelled through the jungle and come across a family of gorillas – you will understand why Diane Fossey dedicated 18 years of her life to protecting this incredible species. You will have time to observe the Rwanda gorillas as they go about their daily life by foraging for food, looking after their young as they jostle playfully and resting in their home environment.

When embarking on a gorilla tour, you will learn that there are strict protocols in place to ensure the safety and preservation of their species. The habituated Rwanda gorilla groups receive a maximum of 8 visitors per day. The trip through the forest can entail anything from a 1 hour to a 4 hour walk and you will always be accompanied by trackers who have years of experience and knowledge from living next to the forest and having spent much of their time with the gorillas.

Spending time in the company of these animals is a heart-warming and magical experience and it’s a true privilege to be in such close proximity of these distant relatives of ours. A Rwanda gorilla tour will stay etched into your memory bank forever.

Interesting Facts about Rwanda Gorillas

In Uganda and Rwanda, the gorillas have adapted specifically to their living environment. Before you embark on a Rwanda gorilla tour, be sure to do a bit of research into their species so that you enhance your experience by possessing knowledge prior to coming into contact with them.

  • In both Rwanda and Uganda, gorillas can be identified by their nose prints, which are unique to each individual.
  • The adult male Rwanda gorillas have more pronounced bony crests on their skulls, giving them a more conical shape in comparison to the females.
  • Adult male gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda are referred to as “silverbacks”, this is because of a saddle of grey or silver-coloured hair that develops on their backs as they age.
  • Rwanda and Uganda gorillas that live in the Virunga Mountains have longer and darker hair than other gorilla species. This allows them to live in hot or cold weather, even in areas where the temperature drops below 0 (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Mountain gorillas are diurnal and active during the hours between 6am and 6pm.
  • Every evening, the mountain gorillas build a new nest to sleep in for the night using surrounding vegetation.

Tips For Your Rwanda Gorilla Tour

Remember that when you enter the mountain gorillas’ terrain, you need to show the utmost respect for their habitat. This means that you will have to keep in mind to preserve the environment and leave it just as you found it. Littering is strictly prohibited, along with spitting (which can cause contamination and introduce disease).

When you come across the gentle mountain gorillas, your guide will remind you to keep your voices low and cough with your hand over your mouth, turned away from the gorillas. You should also avoid rapid movements that may frighten or disturb them and at all times, follow your guide’s directions. Your viewing time is limited to 1 hour, so make sure you make the most of it by taking time to observe and pay respect to these gentle giants as they go about their daily business.

Where can I travel in Rwanda?

Author: Amar Shah
One cannot say enough about the beauty of Rwanda; it goes beyond description and words. Talking about Rwanda, one feels the dearth of words because a tour around this gorgeous country is all you need to appreciate nature and beauty at its best. Rwanda is a land-locked country located in central Africa and is small with an area of 26,338 square kilometres and a population of 7,229,129. The official languages are Kinyarwanda, French, English and Kiswahili which is mostly used in commercial centres. There are several cities and among them is Kigali, the capital city which is centrally locked. The other cities are Butare, Byumba, Gisenyi, Kibungo and Ruhengeri. Getting around Rwanda is expensive using chartered planes and you will not have a nice view of the scenic sites. Travelling by road is the best way to enjoy the nature that she has to offer and there are many ways to do this. You can either go by bus, taxis car hire and minibuses. Kigali is the home to the Genocide Museum which documents the 100-day massacre of 1994. You can spend a few hours here as you learn about the massacre that claimed many lives. On the east of the country is Kibungu which is in the centre of a region of lakes and waterfalls including Lake Mungesera and the Rumuso Falls. Gissenyi is the main centre for excursions in the Parc des Volcans and planes can be taken from here to view the craters. Situated on the north of Lake Kivu, it also offers many opportunities for water sports or for excursions on the lake. Kibuye, further south is another lakeside resort and near Cyangugu on the southern shores of the lake are the magnificent grottoes of Kaboza and Nyenj. There are also the thermal waters at Nyakabuye while nearby the Rugege forest is the home of many rare species of wildlife. Apart from Nyakabuye there are other places that you can get close to Rwanda’s fantastic wildlife and these places include the A’Kagera National Park that covers over 2,500 square kilometres of savannah to the west of the A’Kagera River. There are a variety of animals in this park and it also serves as habitat to more than five hundred species of birds with the easiest point of access being Kabarando. Embark on a gorilla trek at the Parc national des Volcans which is currently guarded by military units who ensure the safety of visitors. After this, you can also go climbing the Virunga Volcanoes between Ruhengeri and Gisenyi and the Nyiragongo in Democratic Republic of Congo is easily climbed from Gisenyi. The entertainment in Rwanda is fantastic as there are several cinemas in Kigali like the Rwanda National Ballet which is famous for traditional dancing and singing. There are several nightclubs which have African, Congolese and Western music in addition to the music bars with food and dancing available. After having a wonderful time at the clubs, you can have a great night sleep in the many types of accommodations available in Rwanda. Hotels are found mostly in Kigali and they are expensive but there are other new hotels in Rwanda at reasonable prices. Missions with dormitory accommodations are also available particularly in remote districts and smaller towns. You can visit Rwanda anytime as there are no season changes and activities take place throughout the year.
