Things To See On Your Holidays in Togo Author: Andrew Gibson Togo is located in West Africa and it borders Ghana in the west, Benin in the east, Burkina Faso in the north and gulf of Guinea coast in the south. Lome is the capital city of Togo. The official language spoken here is French however many other languages besides French are also spoken. This is an ideal place for tourism and has many places of attraction like the Manduri hunting reserve in the Northeast of the country. Tourists can also enjoy the deep-sea fishing of the Gulf of Guinea. If you do choose to come on holiday to Togo with your family it's definitely going to be exciting, Togo has some fantastic attractions and places of interest for both adults and children to enjoy. There are some markets here where a visitor can buy all sorts of clothes, handicrafts and many other things for themselves and their children. There are some villages near to the beach, their culture, traditions and the lifestyle of these people and villages are fascinating. Togo also has a beautiful beach, tourists can soak up the sun on the white sandy beach and then swim in the crystal clear water making it an ideal sun holiday destination. There are also some forests and savannahs which makes up the interior landscape. There are some national parks with many species of African animals to be seen. Generally tourists take 10 day vacation to Benin and Togo. One of the must see places in Togo is the Togo Lake. You can cruise across the Togo Lake to Togoville. Once in Togoville a visit to the German cathedral, the chief's house and the traditional museum are some of the things that should be in your itinerary. After the visit you can cruise back to Sewatrsikope and drive back to Lome, the capital. En route you can visit the Pedakondji fisherman's village. Once in Lome you can explore the city city further. The city harbor, independence square and the city museum are some of the places that you can visit in Lome. You should ideally also cover the Art Street, Lome Central Market and the craftsman village. The next day you could take a drive to Kpalime. While driving to Kpalime you should stop at the foot of the Mt. Agou, and visit the coffee and cocoa plantations. A major attraction in Kpalime is the Kloto craft market. Here you will find some of the most exquisite crafts from West Africa. At Kpalime tourists also visit the campement which is an old German sanatorium. After returning back to Lome you can go to Cotonou and visit the art market Dantopka which is one of the largest markets in West Africa. And for that reason, why not treat your beloved family for an unforgettable experience in the beautiful land of Togo? This lovely country is located in West Africa and home to the capital city Lomé and has a population of more than 6 million people. French is the official language that is spoken in this country even though there are many other languages spoken as well. This is a country that will offer some of the best sights you have ever seen. Nightlife in Togo is exceptionally brilliant. There are numerous nightclubs, particularly in Lomé of which most are open until the early hours for dancing to a mixture of West African and Western popular music. Some of these local nightclubs and restaurants comprise of the Chris & Jimmy's Diner, the Chinatown 3, the Aladdin's Eatery, the Aalay's Shrimp & Fish, the Fanny's Restaurant, the Hornblower's Restaurant, the Mughal Indian Restaurant, the China Garden and the 1890 Restaurant & Lounge. Most restaurants catering for visitors tend to be French-orientated although some do serve African dishes. Have a taste of some mouth watering delicacies like Pâtes or akume, Fufu and Riz sauce arachide. The Stratta Grill & Café bar, the Big Basin Bistro barand and the Cafe Marcella bar offer a good selection of alcoholic drinks like Palm wine and Tchakpallo wines. Likewise, check into some of the beautiful hotels for a relaxing welcome. Well, you can wander round the market with its intriguing voodoo charms, lotions and potions, and the Village Artisanal. Visit Togoville, where the colonial treaty between the Germans and the ruler Mlapa III was signed. The local leader still shows copies of the treaty to visitors. You can also explore the short coastline which is home to several small fishing villages, sometimes with examples of colonial architecture. Spot the wildlife in the Fazao National Park outside Sokodé, the Kéran National Park near Kara and the Fosse aux Lions (Lions' Den) southwest of Dapaong. the traditional mud Takienta tower-houses in Koutammakou, home to the Batammariba. Enjoy water sports in Lake Togo, swim in West Africa's biggest pool (the Olympic-sized pool at Hotel Sarkawa) or cool off at the lakeside resort of Porto Seguro, which has waterskiing and sailing facilities. Much more enjoyable is going whale watching at the Gulf of Benin. Hike in the scenic hill country around Kapilmé. Though cars are available for rent in Togo, the rates are astronomical; you're usually better off hiring a cab for your trip. The few major roads are mostly in decent shape. Traveling by bicycle is an excellent way to explore Togo. The dry summer months of November and December are the best times that you can visit. Togo History During the period from the 11th century to the 16th century, various tribes entered the region from all directions: the Ewé from Nigeria and TOGO; and the Mina and Guin from Ghana. Most settled in coastal areas. When the slave trade began in earnest in the 16th century, the Mina benefited the most. For the next two hundred years, the coastal region was a major raiding center for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast". In an 1854 treaty signed at Togoville, France declared a protectorate over a stretch of territory along the coast and gradually extended its control inland. In 1905, this became the German colony of Togoland. After the German defeat during World War I in August 1914 at the hands of British troops (coming from the Gold Coast) and French troops (coming from Dahomey), Togoland became two League of Nations mandates, administered by the United Kingdom and France. After World War II, these mandates became UN Trust Territories. The residents of British Togoland voted to join the Gold Coast as part of the new independent nation of Ghana, and French Togoland became an autonomous republic within the French Union. Independence came in 1960 under Sylvanus Olympio. He was assassinated in a military coup on 13 January 1963 by a group of soldiers under the direction of Sergeant Etienne Eyadema Gnassingbe. Opposition leader Nicolas Grunitzky was appointed president by the "Insurrection Committee", headed by Emmanuel Bodjollé. However, on 13 January 1967, Eyadema Gnassingbe overthrew Grunitzky in a bloodless coup and assumed the presidency, which he held from that date until his sudden death on 5 February 2005. Eyadema Gnassingbe died in early 2005 after thirty-eight years in power, as Africa's longest-sitting dictator. The military's immediate but short-lived installation of his son, Faure Gnassingbé, as president provoked widespread international condemnation, except from France. However, some democratically elected African leaders such as Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, supported that move, thereby creating a rift within the African Union. Faure Gnassingbé stood down and called elections which he won two months later. The opposition claimed that the election was fraudulent. The developments of 2005 led to renewed questions about a commitment to democracy made by Togo in 2004 in a bid to normalize ties with the European Union, which cut off aid in 1993 over the country's human rights record.[citation needed] Moreover, up to 400 people were killed in the political violence surrounding the presidential poll, according to the United Nations.
