Tips for Your First Time Lhasa Travel or Tibet Travel-china Vacations Info

Tips for Your First Time Lhasa Travel or Tibet Travel-china Vacations Info

Author: Shane Lee

This article is about the Lhasa travel and Tibet travel. You can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your trip to Tibet now.

Tibet is a mysterious land. It is called the "roof of the world" and there are many beautiful stories about this old-line place. You will not feel this unique attraction until you are really standing here in the land of Tibet.

Here are some tips for your first time travel to Tibet:
1. To get in Tibet by air is not a very good choice. The sudden transition of the altitude will possibly cause the severe altitude sickness, which is a big concern for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel.

2. The Qinghai-Tibet train began to operate in July 2006. It took less than 48 hours to travel from Beijing to Tibet by train. The cheapest ticket is only 389 RMB .This kind of transportation is better than the air because you can slowly adapt to Tibet's high altitude instead of a sudden transition of the altitude if you take the plane. The railways are now connected Tibet directly with Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou and Xining. You can find more details about the train services to Tibet from our website: Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM (Lhasa travel, Tibet travel and China vacations Info)

3. You can bring some fruits and bread on your way to Tibet. For the first time travellers to Tibet, the chance to get some altitude sickness is pretty big and you will not have the appetite for regular food because of this sickness. Most people vomitted after eating meats. Fruits are very good choice in this kind of situation.

4. Some medicines(Like flu medicine, antidiarrheal, woundplast, etc) are very helpful for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel. Some people said that the flu would cause the severe altitude sickness and kill the first time Tibet travellers. Actually it is not that terrifying to get some cold in Tibet. You need to take some flu medicine immediatly when you have a cold or fever. This will help to alleviate the altitude sickness in Tibet.

5. If you arrive at Lhasa,Tibet on the midnight, the motels near the railway station is a good choice for you. Some people believe that it will consume too much oxygen if you have a shower in Tibet. This is a ridiculous theory from the travellers getting in Tibet by air. You don't need to worry about this oxygen issue if you got here by train and your body is going to stink after the long time travel if you don't have a shower. :-) The price for these motels is about 70 rmb for a two beds room with hot water.

6. If you don't like the motels in Tibet, you can choose the Balang hostel, Jiri hostel or Xueyu hotel instead. The advantage is that you can find some friends with common interests there and share the costs for the Tibet trip. Balang hostel: 70 rmb for a two beds room, 90 rmb for a three beds room, 100 rmb for a four beds room. 24 hours hot water and laundry services are available in Balang hostel.

7. It is really cold in the morning and you will need to wear a sweater or jacket. Do not take the risk because you will be in big trouble if you get a cold in Tibet.

8. To get out of Tibet by air is a smart choice. You don't need to worry about the altitude sickness anymore and there are airline services available every day in Lhasa. The cost is 1200 rmb from Lhasa to Chengdu and the taxi service from the downtown of Lhasa to Lhasa Gongga airport costs 120 rmb.

New Asia Travel Attraction, Go Tibet By Rail

Author: Subert Kiing

Tibet projects mystic thoughts to many western travelers. And indeed Tibet never fail to impress. Tibetan mountain ranges and landscapes are home to an immense diversity of species of rare plants and birds. Tibetan forests are also famous for its tremendous spectrum of herbs for Chinese medicines. But due to the freezing temperatures and geographical altitudes, China's tourist access to Tibet region has been very limited until recently. On July 1, 2006 Qinghai-Tibet Railroad commenced its passenger service, marking a remarkable milestone in China's infrastructure building. This opens up a way for adventurous tourists to travel from Beijing to the remote Tibet by train with a low budget.

An estimated 90% of tourists would use the railroad to reach Lhasa, Tibet. It is an unique ground expedition across clear cascading streams, spectacular mountain ranges, and the colorful landscapes almost untouched by modern civilization. It would be the dream of urban travelers to experience nature with such a panoramic vision, indulging and rejuvenating for a true getaway from the hectic city-life.

A Centennial Dream Comes True

From its initial conception in the early 1950s, the construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad went through a lengthy 50 years to build. The first section of 814 km, from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, to Golmud began operation in 1984. The Golmud-Lhasa section commenced construction in June 2001. On July 1, 2006, the 1,956-Km Qinghai-Tibet Railroad started its full-length operation. Its 2 inaugural trains, "Qing 1" and "Tibet 2", started service from Golmud and Lhasa separately. China President Hu Jintao labeled the project as an unbelievable achievement both in China and the World's railway construction. This completed mission also realized a centennial dream of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of China's democratic revolution.

The Physical Deterrents

Geographical conditions from Golmod to Lhasa are especially harsh. Perennial icy soil as hard as steel, thick blankets of Winter snow and the high altitudes deterred and slowed down project progress through the many years of site execution. An American, Paul Theroux, prophesized that Kunlun Range was a definite impossible geographical barrier for railroad to get to Lhasa. But the inauguration of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad, now the world's highest railroad terminating in Lhasa, has proven Theroux's prophesy untrue.

Key Facts of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad

1. Qinghai-Tibet Railroad is the world's highest.
2. 960 kms of its tracks are located 4,000 m above sea level.
3. The highest point is 5,072 m above sea level or 200 meters higher than the 2nd highest Peruvian railroad in the Andes.
4. 550 kms of the route run on frozen soil
5. Tanggula Railway Station is the highest railway station in the world (5,068m above sea level)
6. Fenghuoshan Tunnel is the world's highest tunnel on frozen soil (4,905 m above sea level)
7. It is the world's longest plateau railroad, extending 1,956 kms from Xining, Qinghai to Lhasa, Tibet.
8. The Golmud-Lhasa section zigzags 1,142 kms across the Tanggula and Kunlun Ranges.
9. Kunlun Mountain Tunnel is the world's longest plateau tunnel built on frozen soil(1,686 m)
10. The maximum design train speeds are 100 km/h in frozen zones and 120 km/h on non-frozen areas.

Environmental Friendly

Chinese authority responded actively to international call for environmental friendly and sustainable development. 8% of the total development cost was set aside for conservation of environment. Recommendations by the Academy of Environment Protection were taken seriously by the Chinese government before construction. Qinghai-Tibet Railroad was credited with the honor of being the first environmental friendly railroad in the world.

Things to Do on Tibet Tour

Author: huiya

Tibet is the referred real Shangri-la, the forbidden land, the roof of the world and the holy land of your innermost desire. Tibet has snowy mountains and grasslands, scattered herds of yak and nomads on the plateau, spectacular monasteries and unsophisticated smiles, tranquil lake and transparent blue sky. These are just a few of the reasons visitors to Tibet often find themselves coming back.

The first stop for most Tibet tours is inevitably Lhasa, the capital of Tibet Province. Colorful and historic, the holy city of Lhasa lies in a small valley 3700 meters above sea level. The Potala Palace and Jokhang are the must-see destinations for visitors to Lhasa.

Potala Palace is the symbol of Tibet. This palace is sacred in Tibetan people hearts. With its majestic splendor, the Potala Palace would impress the inhabitants of any world capital. Thus the humble Tibetan pilgrim, who has always lived in a yak hair tent, must view the Potala Palace with great reverence. It is hard to believe that this 13-storey edifice containing 999 rooms was built on a steep mountain as long ago as the seventh century. Touring it just like a huge labyrinth. It makes you keep going and going. It is hard to find the way out if let you wander alone there.

Jokhang monastery, built in 647, is the earliest wood-and-masonry structure still existing in Tibet. It is the center of the Tibetan Buddhism and the sacred land of Buddhist followers. Thousands of pilgrims come here for worship everyday. Many of the pilgrims were crawling on the ground. Apparently, on their pilgrimage from their homes, pilgrims prostrate themselves on the ground after walking two steps and then repeat the process again and again. Many others were spinning prayer wheels.

Within the city, are many sites that must be visited; the huge university monasteries of Drepung and Sera, the Barkhor pilgrim circuit and Tibetan Museum.

Besides city Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse and Tsetang in Tibet also remain mystical in many people's minds.

Gyantse was once of major importance as a trading center on the routes between India, Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet and China. Gyantse's symbol is the Kumbum Stupa which is 32 m high and contains 77 rooms and 100,000 images of the Buddha. Kumbum Stupa is the finest example of 15th century Newar art extant in the world. Pelkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse Fort (built atop a massive rock) are other major sights here.

Driving from Lhasa to Gyantse is a long, yet spectacular drive. Along the way, you will get unforgettable views of the Yamdrok-Tso Lake and Mt Nojin Kangtsang.

Shigatse (3,900 m) lies some 274Km to the west of Lhasa and is the second largest city in Tibet. The highway runs alongside the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river passing through narrow gorges and broad river valleys. Farmers plowing their fields with yaks, sheep grazing on the vast plains, awesome sand dunes and rocky hills in the distance are the scenic rewards of this journey.

The Tashilhunpo Monastery, built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, is Shigatse's most important cultural and religious site. The main structures found in the Tashilhunpo Monastery are The Maitreya Chapel, The Panchen Lama's Palace and The Kelsang Temple. Tashilhunpo is the seat of the Panchen Lama since the Fourth Panchen Lama took charge in the monastery, and there are now nearly 800 lamas.

Tsetang: During the long years, Tsetang has had many "first", for instance, the first king Nyatri Tsenpo, the first palace Yumbu Lhakang, the first temple Tradruk, the first cropland Syarisotang, the first Tibetan Opera Pakhapu and the first Buddhist scripture Pangkong Chagya. Tsetang is also the place where King Songtsan Gampo united the whole Tibet and once lived with Princess Wencheng. The Tangka made and embroidered by Princess Wencheng herself is still kept in Tradruk Temple, which is a great treasure house of culture and art.

Samye Monastery is Testang's most important cultural and religious site. Samye monastery was built in the mid-8th century. Samye is first formal Buddhist Monastery for the monks in Tibet. The magnificent and unique Central Hall is three-story high. The first floor is of the Tibetan architectural style, the second the Han style and the third the Indian style. The halls in the monastery house many statues and murals.

Tibet has so many destinations, too numerous to mention, which makes visitors keep coming back. It is a province unique in China for its magnificent temples, snow-capped peaks, nomad camps, pilgrims and ethnic culture. It is a truly a place to stir the senses and nourish the soul - of all the destinations in China.
