Martinique Vacations - Exotic Locale with French Flair

Author: Scott Bateman

Most Caribbean destinations draw visitors either from a cruise or from people who come to stay a week or more. Martinique certainly attracts people for a long-term stay.

About five times as many people come for a stopover vacation than from a cruise. It is one of the highest levels of stopover to cruise visitors of any location in the Caribbean.

The attraction starts with some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, palm trees and hills made thickly green from the island's substantial annual rainfall.

Anyone wanting a break from the sun and sand can take advantage of the island's other attractions. Martinique has a lengthy history as a French territory and ties to Europe going all the way back to visits from Christopher Columbus.

Visitors may want to tour the architecture and history of the capitol city, Fort-De-France. They can see the statues and gardens of La Savane; the place where the famed artist Gauguin lived and painted in 1887; and St. Pierre, where a volcanic eruption of Mont Pelee killed 30,000 residents in 1902.

A good Martinique vacation requires planning with weather in mind. The island's most popular months are January, February, March, April, July and December. The least popular months are September and October because they receive the worst weather of the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

All U.S. and Canadian citizens need a passport and proof of return ticket to enter Martinique. Cruise visitors need a ship ID to exit and re-enter the ship.

Visiting Martinique Island

Author: Gordon Steven

Martinique is an island of of breathtaking contrasts, with lush green vegetation and breathtaking mountainous terrain makes Martinique such a wonderful place to visit. It is a Caribbean Island, part of the French West Indies to the north of Trinidad and Tobago. The most dominant feature on Martinique is Mount Peleee which erupted in 1903 killing 30,000 people. The south of the island has the beautiful beaches and the tourists whilst the north are the rain forests and the black volcanic sand beaches which are a must see for visitors who love to explore.

You will be able to lie around and sun bathe on isolated almost unvisited beaches not sharing with anyone. Other more developed beaches on Martinique Island can be equally enjoyed with their cafes and restaurants, and there are beaches less popular but with facilities. One thing is certain and that is that Martinique has a beach that will be right for you, with the southern beaches which face the Atlantic being undeveloped. The Beaches on the Caribbean coastline are white sand to be found in a huge number of bays and inlets, and quite superb and safe for swimming. To the north on the Atlantic side are beaches with waves ideal for surfers, whilst on the Caribbean side are picturesque volcanic sandy beaches with picturesque fishing villages.

As Martinique is a dependent territory of France uses the Euro as currency and so US Dollars aren't accepted in shops but credit cards can be used.

It is a superb place to eat with a fantastic blend of French and Creole cooking, and the number of high quality dining options makes Martinique unique amongst Caribbean Islands, and is probably brought about by the high number of French tourists, and a growing interest in Creole food .

The climate is tropical and humid with a temperature range of 75degrees Fahrenheit to 85 degrees. The rainy season is June to October when it is regularly visited by tropical cyclones. There are tourist seasons on Martinique with high season from December to April, but you must expect much higher prices and crowds of tourists. May to November is quiet with the associated weather risks. The months of May and June are a good time to visit, with few tourists with low humidity and low prices. July and August are hot and humid with quite a lot of rain but the weather is really pleasant especially for touring around. It is potentially the cyclone season but their potential is a good reason for avoiding September.

Martinique gives you the option to just lie around and relax in a beautiful place, but also to take part in every land and offshore activity that you can think of, and are the same but different as on other islands. However there are additional activities that the terrain allows you won't find anywhere else, such as Canyoning.

There is something for everyone on Martinique, all you have to do is to go there and experience it for yourself

Great Sailing Vacation in Martinique

Author: Paul Hata

Martinique is an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea.Martinique is also one of the twenty-six regions of France and an integral part of the Republic. As part of France, Martinique is part of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro.It has a land area of 1,128 square km and a population of around 402,000.

A sailing vacation in Martinique is just one of the showcases in the French Caribbean. Not only will tourists be able to enjoy the flawless beaches, lush forests, beautiful flowers and coral reefs but also the culture and panache of French culture. There are four places to visit here when you decide to go inland.

First is the capital itself that is Fort-de-France. There are a lot of old churches here like the St. Louis Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Sacre-Coeur de Balata Cathedral, that is a replica of the original in France, the Bibliotheque Schoelcher, which was built for the 1889 Paris Exposition, and then shipped to Martinique and reassembled, or the beautiful La Savane, a large park with walkways, views, and a marble statue of Empress Josephine.

Second is Saint-Pierre that was once the island's capital before it was badly damaged by the volcanic eruption more than a century ago. The beaches here are quite different because where else on earth will you be able to walk on sand that are grey or black in color.

Third is the the Anse Turin beach just to the south which has grey sand, jungles nearby, and the Musee Paul Gauguin, and the Anse Ceron beach that is a short drive on the north, has black sandy beaches, coconut palms, and some fantastic diving.

Fourth is The Grand-Riviere which is a fishing village situated on the cliffs on the northern tip of the island. It has some scenic roadways, which help to relax the mind. The tourist booth called the Syndicat d'initiative offers some group hikes up to the nearby Mont Pelee, or you can fish or even try a little surfing while you're here.

You won't have a problem looking for charter companies as there are plenty of them on the island. The best place will probably be Port de Plaisance which can be found in Le Marin in the south that happens to be the biggest and most well-equipped marina on the island.

There is also a port at Pointe du Bout, which is located across from Fort de France, and there are ports in Le Robert and Le Francois on the Atlantic, and in Sainte-Anne, on the south of the island.

To give you an idea of what is being offered, there are three types of boats to choose from namely bareboats, skippered boats, and crewed.

Bareboat - In order for you to rent a bareboat, you must present a license so the company knows that their vessel will be returned in piece. They usually don't come with extras like kayaks or scuba equipment so you will have to rent these separately.

Skippered Boat - Skippered boats on the other hand come with a captain who will serve as both your guide and navigator. The cost of getting one is almost the same as a crewed boat but it does not include any meals.

Crewed Charter - For those who have money, then go with a crewed charter. This is because everything you need will be taken cared of including the food so sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

You should be careful when you are going on a sailing vacation in Martinique and the nearby area so as not to cause damage to the vessel or the coral reefs. A bigger danger you should be aware of is the harsh weather during the summer as this causes choppy waves since it is hurricane season. The important thing is for you to have a safe journey while you are in the water until you return to port.
