Andorra: A Secret Skiing Paradise

Author: Roger Munns

The Pyrenees are known for being a skier's nirvana. Located on the borders of Spain and France, they offer skiers some of the best slopes in the world. Though many visitors choose to stay in either Spain or France, there is one more option. For the best in skiing, services and hospitality, the tiny country of Andorra should be your holiday destination. It's got everything that you need at half the price.

Andorra is located in the Pyrenees surrounded by Spain and France. Once an isolated and unknown land, it is now a highly prosperous country because of its tourism industry. At an average of 83.5 years, the people of Andorra claim the highest life expectancy in the world. Because of its position within the mountains, the country doesn't have much in common with the rest of Europe, except for Spain and France. It's gone through many changes over the years, like being occupied by France and declaring war on imperial Germany during World War I.

Today, Andorra enjoys its status as the skiing tourist's hotspot. Nine million visitors come to the country every year to enjoy its slopes and world-class resorts. Its duty-free status is another reason that it has so many visitors, as goods can be purchased much cheaper than in the rest of Europe.

Grandvalira, the largest ski resort in Andorra, is getting more visitors every year. The resort reports an increase of twelve percent this past season over the 2006-7 skiing season. Thanks to an abundance of snowfall and artificial snow creation, the resort opened earlier than usual. This fact combined with great conditions toward the end of the skiing season gave Grandvalira one of its most successful seasons in recent memory.

Skiers at the close of the season enjoyed a meter of snowpack and powdered snow. With the snowfall and artificial snow creation the resort was able to maintain 100% percent ski lift use and 95 percent slope use, some of the highest numbers in the Pyrenees region. These conditions kept skiers coming from all around the globe, and a reported 1,512,000 skiers enjoyed the slopes over the course of the season.

Another reason that Grandvalira experienced such an increase in tourist traffic was the celebration of Pas de la Casa's fiftieth anniversary. Pas de la Casa was the original name of the ski resort that was integrated into Grandvalira. To celebrate this, Grandvalira presented a full schedule of events for visitors. They included various sporting events, a skier's statue inauguration, and a week dedicated to the history of the resort's cuisine. Even Mickey Mouse got in on the action by making an appearance at the ski and snowboard school for photos.

In recent years, France and Spain have had their share of tourists, but Andorra has also been a very popular winter destination. From skiing the many kilometers of slopes to shopping for luxury items in duty free shops, the tiny country of Andorra has something for every winter vacationer. Its tiny size makes it ideal for focusing on skiing. Hopefully, next year's season will be even better than the last, and the snow will keep coming down.

Andorra Skiing, Fantastic Choice for Intermediate and Beginner Skiers

Author: jamiehanson

In fact, the average height of the mountains you'll find here are less than 2000 meters (lowest place is just under 900 meters), with the tallest peak being Coma Pedrosa standing at 2500 meters. If you're an avid skier or just like to get away for an annual ski holiday, then Andorra may be the place for you—cool summers and wintery, snowy winters make for an outdoor Mecca of sorts. Because Andorra is situated between France and Spain so perfectly, it's quite easy to get to. Given this, it's surprising how small the crowds become when France and Spain are bursting at the seams with tourists. This is not to say that Andorra is not popular, quite the contrary. Andorra is just an alternative ski holiday destination—it seems that not everyone thinks of coming here, even though it's so close and offers comparable skiing. The ski resorts in Andorra are a fantastic choice for intermediate and beginner skiers. Experts can have a challenging time too, but the slopes are more geared to the middle ground holiday skier. There are ski schools and board schools, then, to teach you anything you may not already know. The ski resorts in Andorra are full of places for young teeny-bobbers to go and hit the apres ski venues well into the night; but, also, Andorra has plenty of resorts catering to an older, or at least a more peaceful, crowd. The ski resorts of Andorra offer plenty for solo and family skiers. Some Andorra skiing you'll find on the eastern end of the country include Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, Soldeu el Tarter, Canillo and Encamp. On the westernmost side of Andorra, you'll find the Arinsal, Pal, La Massana, and Ordino-Arcalis ski areas the most inviting. Though some of the ski resorts run into eachother or share common space with either Spain or France, some offer some really distinct skiing. Arinsal is a nice place for beginners. There are 68 km of pistes and 43 total runs, with 19 of those reserved for beginners. With 30 total lifts, you'll not be waiting around for your turn all day. Encamp ski resort in Andorra has a snowboard park and 100 total runs, with 40 of those dedicated for beginners. There are nearly double the lifts than at Arinsal with 63 total lifts taking you to a max height of 2600 meters. Similarly, La Massana has a lift that takes you to 2570 meters and gives you 89 pistes to practice on. There's even one snowboard park and 26 lifts with plenty of snow cannons. The longest run you'll have here is 6 km. Pal in Andorra, on the other hand, can take you only to 2560 meters on the highest of 30 lifts. The resort itself lies at 780 meters but you'll find 68 km of runs just above it. There are 42 total runs and beginners and intermediates will both be well served with 19 and 18 runs respectively. There are snow cannons and a max per person uphill service of 30,000 skiers per hour. Pas de la Casa is a little lower resort and lies at just over 2000 meters. The highest lift, however, will take you higher than Pal at 2640 meters. The longest run here is 6 km but there are 51 total runs, more than many of the other resorts. The reason is simple: the 40 beginner and 37 intermediate ski runs leaves 23 expert runs, probably the most you'll find in Andorra. There are 63 lifts (almost double the others) and plenty of snow cannons keeping 95,000 skiers per hour snow bound and happy. Soldeu el Tarter can take you to 2560 meters high on 63 lifts and 193 km of pistes. This means there are 100 runs and 40 reserved for beginners and 37 for intermediates. There are snow cannons and north facing slopes. The good thing about all these ski resorts in Andorra is the price, comparably cheaper than other alpine resorts, especially for Western Europe. Though the vibe may be the same and the resorts uniformly the "same" in appearance, design and slopes, the skiing here is second to none if you want some great skiing without "western" prices. The snow is reliable and if you're with friends rather than family, you'll have the chance to participate in an apres ski venue that is exciting and wild. The slopes are nicely cared for across the board and the whole of Andorra has nice lifts, groomed pistes and plenty of things to do on and off the slope. Combined with a duty free country, you can't serve your vices for any cheaper.

Five Things To See On Your Holidays In Andorra

Author: Andrew Gibson

Andorra is a very small country which can be described as having more mountains than inhabitation. It is a tiny state which is situated between France and Spain. The language spoken here is Catalan is also the official language. The princedom of Andorra is made up some mountains, breathtaking countryside and beautiful winding rivers.

For some years now Andorra has become very popular place for skiing and believe it or not duty-free shopping. This has made this place very rich and is also attracting foreigners to come and work here. There are around 11 million visitors who visit Andorra yearly, most of them on a holiday. This has led to very haphazard and ugly expansion of the city.

As for airports; the adjacent on the Spanish side is the one in Barcelona, and on the French territory is Toulouse-Blagnac. You will be able to get buses from Andorra, which travel daily to these places. It is possible to reach Andorra only by road. When you travel by road, you will be able to enjoy the imposing Port d'Envalira, as the road goes under this pass. It is the highest pass in the Pyrenees.

Caldea is the biggest fun spa centre situated in southern Europe; it is a water palace at an altitude of 1000 meters. The building is exceptional in its architecture and has all possible facilities.

Pas de la Casa is a town in Andorra, a small mountainous country in high slopes of Pyrenees Mountains. It has the best snow reliability in Andorra. It is an incredible ski resort, with a variety bars to make your evening more enjoyable.

Esglsia de Santa Coloma is the oldest a pre-Romanesque form of the Church of Santa Coloma in Andorra. The church's tall, free standing 12th-century bell still stands intact, whereas most of the remainder has been modified over the centuries.

Museu Nacional de l'Automebil is a museum which has 80 vintage cars and many antique motorcycles displayed. It also exhibits around old 100 bicycles.

Plaesa del Poble is a huge public square on the roof of the Edifici Administratiu Govern d'Andorra, which is a government office building. You can see dreamy views of the valley and mountains from here.

Andorra is situated high up in the Pyrenees Mountains and an exceptional place to go for a holiday. When on your holiday in winter you can discover some of the best ski slopes of Andorra. It is also a great holiday destination in summer. You can stop over here on the way from Spain to France. Andorra la Vella which is the capital is a pleasant town, and has some nice museums and in general the atmosphere here is very relaxed and very suitable for holidaying.

Mid December is a good time to go as the snow starts to fall and the ski season is in full swing. This lasts till April, as sometimes the resorts for their business help out nature with artificial snow. The temperature is mild in late July, August and September and can be a good time to holiday.

Many holiday makers go to Andorra on a skiing holiday and rent a ski chalet. They rent these ski chalets in Andorra as holiday accommodation direct from their holiday home owners. Families on holiday to Andorra also like to rent self catering holiday apartments as holiday homes.
