Belgrade - Serbia and Montenegro, Something Different and Exiting for the Tourist Looking for Something Different, Taste the Soul and Mind of Serbia

Author: Stig Kristoffersen

Most interesting parts of Belgrade for the tourist is found between the outer walls of the Kalemegdan fortress and the Republic Square. This is an area with a diameter of about 1300 meters. Most tourist targets are therefore within walking distance from each other. Traffic in Belgrade is quite dense, and the public transportation system is somewhat less efficient. You should plan your visit by foot.

The lively parts of the city, at least in the summer evenings, are found along the pedestrian road Kneza Mihaila , straying in the side alleys looking for cafes, pubs and clubs, until reaching the Republic Square , and then proceed to Skadarlija . In daytime the animated area is somewhat larger, extending on one side to the Kalemegdan park, and on the other side to Terazije , Mose Pijade and the first part of Boulevar revolucije . These streets and squares still have the same name, while the toponomastic of the city has significantly changed in other cases, as a result of the dissolution of the communist regime and of the Yugoslav federation.
The commercial and cultural center of the city is along Kneza Mihaila , a pedestrian street dedicated to Prince Michael, the first ruler of a fully independent Serbia. Beginning from Terazije, where the Belgrade Cultural Center is located and nearby, in an underground passage, the Tourist Information Center, which is not very informed. Then the road widens to a square, called locally a terrace, of the Ruski Car (Russian Emperor), full of open air cafes. Turning on the right, you can get to Trg Republike , the Republic Square, with the Narodni muzej and the Narodno pozoriste (National Theater).
The Kneza Mihaila proceeds with porches, many shops, some monuments in the middle, and in the summer evenings there are always singers and artists performing on the street. Then you can find the French and American Cultural Centers.
On the right there is the faculty of Philosophy, going down a few steps, passing among the used book stalls, to Akademski Trg where there is the Plato cafe, book shop and jazz club. From there, you can proceed to the Studentski Trg, the Square of the Students, with the Kolarac Cultural Center, the Studentski Park and the Faculty of Sciences. This is one of the centers of the students' life, although many more faculties and the University Library are along Boulevar revolucije. The students spend their nights in some of the pubs, cafes and clubs.
Back to Kneza Mihaila, one finds on the left the SANU building of the Serbian Academy of Science and Art, with book shops and galleries; many more private galleries, with exhibitions of paintings and sculptures, are nearby. Then on the left the British Council , and on the right the German Cultural Center. The last portion of Kneza Mihaila has cafes and restaurants spread on the street, the Faculty of Painting and the City Library, and ends across the street from the entrance of the Kalemegdan park.
In the eastern part of the old city, traditionally the Bohemian quarter, there are several streets with interesting shops and well preserved buildings. In particular you should visit Skadarlija, which is the familiar name of the street, whose actual name is Skadarska, which is immediately east of Republic Square. In this pedestrian only street the appearance of the city, as it was in the 19th and early 20th century. Restaurants and pubs fill most of it with their open air tables, there are art galleries and bakeries open all night, folk groups singing either gypsy music of traditional city music, people dressed in traditional Serb costumes.
This is a place for families, full of children, but also of young couples; a place to taste the typical rostili , that is grill with a pivo (beer), and to spend an evening talking with friends. The few tourists now visiting Belgrade mix with the local people, here more than everywhere else in the city.
Museums and monuments are a very important tourist attraction of Belgrade, They are also the biggest source of frustration for the foreign tourist. The Museums and monuments open to the public have plenty of personnel, but few of them have guides qualified and capable of speaking in some foreign language. The museum bookshops typically have very few catalogues and monographs, almost all in Serbian. Some museums are closed, sometimes for reasons which are not explained and some do not actually exist any more.
The only systematic sources of information on Museums and exhibitions are in the journal Weekly Beograd , in English, which is on sale at Plato and at few other book shops, in the leaflet Beograd this week which is distributed at the Tourist Information Center , plus the museum and monument symbols on the city maps . However, these listings have low reliability.

Serbia Vacations

Author: marko

Visit Serbia

In terms of vacation, Serbia has stil undiscovered country in the world. Although it is not usual holidays destination, attractions of this land are unustly neglected. There are litle countries in Europe with such rugged and beautiful montain and saved nature. Several Serbian monasteries are protected by UNESCO, and vitit to them is unique expirience.

All people in Europe have heard about Serbia because of recent events. They gave Serbia a bed name, but every foreigner after only a couple of day in Serbia changes his prejudices about Serbia.

Where is Serbia?

Serbia is situated in central Balkan and lies on the crossroads of several important routes. The Danube, one of the biggest river in the world flows across capital of Serbia – Belgrade. Belgrade lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube river. North of Belgrade is plain called Vojvodina which built its identity during the time of Habsburg rule. South of Belgrade lies central Serbia where local traditional products are stile competitive. The Turkish influence is best preserved in the south Serbia.

Serbia Vacations

Foreign tourists mostly visit Belgrade. Some of them also visit beautiful city of Novi Sad. If you would like to really discover Serbia, I recommended you to visit south Serbia and its mountains and villages, esspecially southwestern Serbia and mountains Zlatibor and Tara. Yor vacations in Serbia will not be complete if you visit only Belgrade.

Serbia Accommodation

There are a lot very cheap rooms in the villages ( 5 euros per person), but also there are comfortable and modern apartments, studios, villas where price can be 50 euros. If you don’t need villas, in every tourist place you can find comfortable accommodation for about 20 euros. Accommodation in Novi Sad and Belgrade is more expensive.

Kopaonik in Serbia

Author: Jasmine Stone

Skiing in Kopaonik, Serbia is becoming a growing trend for skiers looking to move away from the commercial skiing facilities of Central and Northern Europe in search of more naturally occurring skiing trails. With a snow range of 1770-2017 metres and a village positioned 5,000 feet above sea level Kopeonik in Serbia is seen as the answer to many skiers' dreams. With a three hour journey from the nearest airport Kopaonik is surely worth the effort, having cross-country skiing, night skiing, skydiving, sleigh rides, ice-skating, indoor tennis and many other activities for the winter sports enthusiast to enjoy.

The mountain climbs 35,000 feet into the cold Serbian sky, whilst ski lifts only climb to 6,617 feet. The skiing facility is yet to host a major skiing event; despite being home to several international snowboarding competitions and cross-country skiing as well. The living quarters are apt for pricing that would delight the weariest of tourists. Skiers can experience national cuisine such as Burek (pastry, cheese, spinach) and Pljeskavica (grilled mince) for well under $10 a meal. The old favorites such as burger, chips and pizza are still on the menu, and the price of $1.50 a beer might delight some holiday makers looking to do slightly more than just ski! The living area can handle over 5,000 tourists at the same time, whilst the bars and clubs around the area make the holiday destination more suited to the younger holiday-maker. Another issue that is quite prominent is the mistake that many make in travelling to Kopaonik to celebrate Christmas - the celebrations are of slight comparison to western culture, despite its labelling as a winter heaven.

With different piste types Kopaonik caters for beginners, intermediates and experts with the following ratio.
? 15 beginner
? 8 intermediate
? 6 expert

Having 21 lifts and an uphill capacity of 15,000 (an hour) Kopaonik is more than capable of catering for its millions of visitors each year. With slopes facing N, N/E and N/W you can be sure to experience the densely populated villages that surround the region. Thriving from the tourism the mountain provides, Kopaonik has recently became home to a 4 star luxury hotel providing entertainment and accommodation to skiers and executives alike.

With the longest run covering 3.5 KM and expert tuition on hand, Kopaonik has recently benefited from its appointment of English speaking instructors across skiing and snowboarding disciplines. The advanced runs down the Kopaonik mountain-face are a primary incent
ive for many skiers to choose Kopaonik as their skiing holiday destination. The 6 runs that fit into this category must be epitomised by the Konaci - which a local holiday village was recently named after.
The Konaci has an angle of 79 degrees at a certain point, which it is said that - if you go too slow, and fail to position yourself correctly, it would be perfectly feasible to fall forwards merely travelling in a straight line. The Konaci sees skiers travelling at speeds of over 50 MPH and jumps that allow airtime of over 8 seconds. The Konaci is praised and feared by the top skiers from Europe and further a field. Despite this, the run featured in the 2005 snowboarding event that took place in the Kopaonik mountains.

With snow falling on the slopes between August/September all the way through to early March, skiers should plan their trip with that in mind. The slopes of Serbia and the warm generous nation make Kopaonik an ideal holiday destination for any traveler looking to have a good time on a set of skis. The package deals start from around $400 a week, whilst amazing savings can be made through booking online.
The destination expects 10, 000 visitors a week by 2009, and with its intention to develop further runs across every piste you can be sure that Kopaonik, Serbia will be a skiing location that will stay firmly on the map.

A Brief Look at the Capital City of Belgrade For Tourists

Author: Ram Singh

The capital city of Belgrade is the largest city of Serbia. The city is situated on two international waterways, at the junction of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain run into the Balkan Peninsula. The city has an estimated population of 1,630,000 (based on official estimate in 2007). Belgrade is the largest city in the region of the former Yugoslavia, the second largest city on the Danube River, and the fourth largest in Southeastern Europe after the cities of Istanbul, Athens, and Bucharest.

It is considered as one of the oldest cities in Europe with archeological remnants that prove early settlements were established as early as the 6th millennium BC. Belgrade's expansive city area was the birthplace of the largest prehistoric culture of Europe, the Vinča culture.

The city was initially discovered by the Greeks, founded and later named by the Celts as White City. The city was awarded city rights initially by the Romans before it was later permanently established from the 600s onwards.

Belgrade has its own autonomous city government and the status of a separate territorial unit in Serbia. Its territory is divided into 17 municipalities with its own local council. The city covers 3.6% of the territory of Serbia, and comprises 24% of the country's population lives in the city. Belgrade is the central economic center of Serbia, and at the same time the hub of Serbian culture, education and science.

Belgrade is located at the junction of the Danube and Sava rivers, at coordinates 44°49'14" North, 20°27'44" East and lies at 116.75 meters (383 ft) above sea level. The historical center of Belgrade, Kalemegdan, is situated on the right bank of the rivers. As of the 19th century, the city has been growing to the south and east.

The city has an urban area of 360 square kilometres (139 sq mi) and total aggregate area considering its metropolitan area covers 3,223 square kilometers (1,244.4 sq mi). Based on history, Belgrade has been a primary crossroad between the West and the Orient.

Central Belgrade has a hilly terrain situated on the right bank of the Sava. The highest peak of Belgrade proper is Torlak hill with a height of 303 meters (994 ft). The mountains of Avala, 511 meters (1,677 ft), and Kosmaj, 628 meters (2,060 ft), rest south of the city. The land across the Sava and Danube is mostly flat and made up of alluvial plains and plateaus.

Belgrade has a modest continental climate. The average year-round temperature is 11.7 °C (53.1 °F). The hottest month is July with an average temperature of 22.1 °C (71.8 °F). There are 31 days, on average, in a year when the temperature is above 30 °C, and 95 days when the temperature is above 25 °C. Belgrade has an average precipitation of about 700 millimetres (27.56 in) a year. The city has an average annual number of sunny hours of 2,096. The sunniest months in a year are July and August, with an average of about 10 sunny hours a day, while December and January are the gloomiest with an average of 2-2.3 sunny hours daily. The highest official recorded temperature in Belgrade was +43.1 °C, while the lowest temperature was -26.2 °C experienced in January 10, 1893.

The Neolithic cultures were established in or near Belgrade and the Balkans as well as other parts of Central Europe and Asia Minor about 7,000 years ago. Several scholars think that the prehistoric signs here signify the earliest known form of alphabet. After many centuries, the Greek Argonauts discovered the river Sava in ancient Belgrade, which they named Cauliac, while sailing from the Black Sea going upstream. In the fourth century BC, the Scordisci - a Celtic tribe - settled in the city and has recorded the name of the community as Singidūn before becoming the romanized Singidunum in the first century AD.
