Tourism in Ukraine - a New Industry But More and More Important

Author: Stig Kristoffersen

Tourism is one of Ukraine fastest growing industries. Based on population density, the Ukrainian market is more than 50% larger than Hungary, Czech and Slovakia combined.

Tourism has become one of the key factors driving the Ukrainian economy, generating approx. $ 4 billion in 2001, calculated in accordance with WTO (World Tourism Organization) methods. The State Tourism Administration reported that 5.8 million foreign tourists visited Ukraine in 2001, which represents a 31% growth compared with 2000. Overall in 2001, the State Border Control Service recorded nearly 11 million foreign arrivals in Ukraine. However, it should be noted that almost 75 percent of all foreign visitors arrived from Russia and other Newly Independent States.

Non-NIS tourists who visited Ukraine were predominantly from Hungary, Poland, Germany, and USA. Almost 54, 000 U.S. citizens visited Ukraine in 2000. An average foreign visitor spends 4 days in Ukraine, leaving in the country $ 600 per trip. The most popular destinations with foreign travelers are Kyiv (attracts 30% of all foreign visitors), Crimea (another 30%), Carpathian region including Lviv, and Odessa. Most of western travelers prefer either individual travel or cruise tours. Western Ukraine is a traditional destination for U.S. and Canadian travelers (who represent over 2 million Ukrainian Diaspora in these countries). Crimea, an old soviet tourism Mecca, has become a popular vacation spot for medium-to-lower financial strata of Germans.

The modernization of Ukraine’s tourism infrastructure is becoming an important priority for the Ukrainian and Crimean governments. [Note: Crimea has the status of an autonomous republic within Ukraine with its Constitution and Government.] Tourism is recognized for its potential in generating hard currency revenues. In 1999, the Ukrainian President by his Decrees created incentives for the development of a tourism infrastructure by establishing special economic zones in major Ukrainian tourist regions.

During the years of independence (since 1991) Ukraine’s tourism infrastructure has been gradually changing ownership from government to private. The private sector is developing rapidly, especially Kyiv, Odessa, Crimea and the Carpathian region. To host visitors Ukrainian tourism facilities include over 1 300 hotels, motels, campsites, tourism centers, and about 3000 recreational facilities. Ukraine considers these recreational centers (sanatoriums, spas, mud treatment facilities and others) as tourism facilities, rather then medical treatment institutions. Ukraine considers these recreational centers (sanatoriums, spas, mud treatment facilities and others) as tourism facilities, rather then medical treatment institutions.

Seaside resorts, with centers in Crimea and Odessa, face a relatively short season and serious competition from other destinations. This region was the center of recreational tourism in the former Soviet Union, and is therefore flooded with outdated resorts and sanatoriums formerly managed by trade unions. Crimea offers ideal climatic conditions, many curative mineral waters, peat and mud. In order to extend the season in Crimea, local companies and municipalities have developed attractive investment projects for the construction of winter sport facilities, hiking, marinas, entertainment centers and cruises. In addition, Crimea has historic sites associated with the Ancient Greek and Ottoman periods. The archeological relicts of old Greek towns Tyra, Olvia, Chersonesos, and Panticapaea attract many international visitors. The Crimean tourism industry generates over 50% of the Crimean GDP, evidencing the significance of this sector for the republic.

The Carpathian region offers a unique combination of mountains, clean air, curative spas, historic sites and ethnic culture. This is where most travelers from the United States, Canada and Western Europe tend to congregate. Development of hotels in regional centers (Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Uzhgorod) cities, resort hotels, convention centers, ski facilities, spas, hiking grounds, and convention centers, offer good opportunities for investments. Lviv medieval historic center is included in the UNESCO list of historic treasures, making it especially interesting for construction and design companies.

Ukraine considers these recreational centers (sanatoriums, spas, mud treatment facilities and others) as tourism facilities, rather then medical treatment institutions.
Skiing is a major Carpathian tourism draw. Long-lasting and reliable snow conditions make Carpathian skiing popular. U.S. community ski fans report that the slopes in Slavsko (Lvivska Oblast) and Yaremcha (Ivano-Frankivska Oblast) compare well to Piks Peak and the Killington ski areas in Vermont. Zakarpatska Oblast has several three-kilometer downhill runs, desirable for slalom. Other popular skiing areas in the Carpathian Mountains are Dragobrat, Tissovets, Vorokhta and Yaremcha. Most of skiing enthusiasts come to the Carpathian Mountains from Russia, the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, and the local foreign community. Crimea, in an effort to extend the season, has come up with attractive proposals to create modern ski resorts in the Crimean Mountains.
Farm Tourism. Bed and breakfast, home stay and farm tours offer potentials and could form accommodation development in the mountain villages. Farm and cottage tourism have potential because visitors interested in nature tolerate a minimal level of services which are in short supply in Ukraine.

The long mountain ridges, rural roads, and farmlands provide a good opportunity for mountain biking in the Carpathians and Crimea. The market is presently undeveloped: mountain bikes, equipment and spare parts are difficult to find. In addition, local tourism officials are unfamiliar with this large specialty market developing in Europe and North America.

The Carpathian streams offer class III rapids during the spring months. With appropriate marketing, the Carpathian streams may become a popular destination with western white water enthusiasts. Yachting is gaining in popularity with local high-class population of Ukrainians and locally headquartered international business community. Projects for developing marinas on the Crimea Black Sea coast are being in the pipeline. Alushta Marina project in Alushta, Crimea, is included in the state tourism development program as a priority investment project in the tourism infrastructure area.

Historic and cultural sites are concentrated in Kyiv, Lviv, Chernihiv, Odessa, and Crimea. Local governments in these cities are developing historic preservation programs and are seeking investors and construction firms for their implementation. Lviv city medieval downtown is included in the UNESCO Record of Historic and Architectural World Treasures. Almost half of all Ukrainian architectural relicts are located in the Lviv Oblast. There is a state program of “Lviv Downtown Rebirth”, whereby the Ukrainian government will support any effort aimed at the reconstruction of the 16th0-18th century city center.

One of the advantages that Ukraine has over its neighbors, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary is that traditional styles of life continue to be preserved. In the villages of the Carpathian National Park traditional dress and farming practices continue to be maintained. Western travelers express an ongoing interest in the artisan studio tours in the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Local wood and woven crafts are extremely popular with Ukrainian diaspora.

Development of golf clubs is apparently not a Ukrainian government’s priority. After 11 years of independence, a 50 million people country does not have a single golf course. However, recent developments show that one may be open soon near Kyiv. An 18-hole golf course is being developed by Kyiv-based Golden Gate Golf Club. Given the slow pace of business development outside of Kyiv, opportunities for the construction of more golf facilities is unlikely. However, adding a small golf facility to a luxury hotel built in Crimea may be a reasonable expectation.

The Ukraine

Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe, after Russia. The country is rather flat and includes the autonomous region of Crimea in the south.

Most of the Crimean Tatars were forcibly moved to Central Asia in 1944 to suppress their nationalist intentions.

Ukrainian

The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian; one of the three East Slavic languages, closely related to Russian and Belorussian.

Early Ukrainian History

Tatar Mongols invaded the area in the 13th century but the western Ukrainian principality of Galicia, founded in the 12th century, suffered less from the Mongol invasion.

Annexed by Poland in the 14th century, although the Ukrainian Cossacks allied themselves with Russia.

The partitions of Poland saw much of the land handed over to Russia in 1667, while Galicia became a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1772 to 1919.

The Cave monastery, Perchersky, was founded in the early 11th century and is one of the most sacred buildings of the Russian Orthodox church.

The ruins of the Golden Gate also date from the same period and was once the main entrance to the city.

Kiev was the centre of the Rus principality in the 11th and 12th centuries AD, and it is still known as the Mother of Russian Cities.

Cities of the Ukraine. Kharkov. a Personal View

Cities of the Ukraine. Kharkov. a Personal View

Author: Terrence Aubrey

Kharkov is one of The Ukraine's big 1,000,000 plus inhabitants cities and is a city that I have come to both know and love well, as it is the place of the head office of my Dating Agency, Confidential Matchmakers and I spend a lot of time here.

It is some 500 km,s south east of the Ukraine capital of Kiev and was many years ago the capital of The Ukraine. It is very close to the Russian border and is very much part of the Pro Russia Ukraine. I should explain...... Many people of the Ukraine are either Russian, or part Russian by birth and or speak Russian, rather than Ukrainian.

This is due to the 70 plus years of occupation of the Soviets during the period of the Soviet Union and the huge movements and inter marriage of peoples during this period. Unfortunately these divisions have and remain as obstacles to The Ukraine's moving forward into the modern World, in unity and with a common purpose.

So, back to Kharkov how to describe it? It reflects the best and the worst of this huge and beautiful country. The center of the city is truly magnificent. Kharkov was a very important city for the Soviets and they built some magnificent and seriously imposing administrative buildings here. Soviet architecture is I suspect love it, or hate it. It cannot really be described as beautiful, or graceful, but it is undeniably strong, proud and full of statement and maybe most important of all completely individual and unique.

Kharkov is also the home of Europe's biggest Square, it seems to have two names, Freedom Square and Lenin Square. Maybe the name of Freedom Square was given after the withdrawal of the Soviets? It is a truly magnificent Square leading into what was once a very important and still remains today a very grand and impressive collection of administrative buildings. The whole area was constructed from cobbled stones, millions of them and was very well designed and built. You can almost picture the army of comrades that it must have taken some 50 years ago, constructing this monumental statement.

The south side of this Square is the entrance to a huge and beautiful park (the soviets created magnificent parks in all the major cities and towns of The Ukraine) . There are many varieties of impressive and beautiful trees, Many grand fountains and ponds and a huge variety of cafes, bars and restaurants catering for all, from children to adults and including teenagers.

I told you it was not all good.........The roads....many are really terrible and the drivers, even worse. A small minority within The Ukraine have money and they want everyone to be aware of the fact. They buy very expensive Jeeps and saloons (always black) and they drive as though they own the road, quite possibly they do....

Whilst some of the roads in the center are OK many are terrible, or even worse with pot holes you can almost park a car in! It is possible to wreck a car within one week in this city without any problem. Adding to the problem there is still a huge network of trams and tram lines criss/crossing the city and driving through, over and around these things would probably test even a Hummer. These trams are again a left over from the soviet times and are all some 50, or more years old, but still funcioning.

Kharkov is a very important University with close to 500,000 students. The education system within The Ukraine is excellent and education is taken very seriously here. I was very fortunate to be here during the 200th anniversery of Kharkov University and it was some party. Maybe 20,000 students filled freedom Square and from a Rolling Stone size temporary stage came some pretty good rock music. Maybe the next big thing "Rus/Rock"?

Kharkov City Ukraine

Author: Dompavlov

Kharkov is the second largest city in Ukraine after Kiev. It is an industrial educational and cultural megalopolis with population of around 1.7 million people.

The city is located in the north-eastern part of Ukraine, on the border of forest-steppe and steppe zones. It has temperate continental climate with long but not severe winter and warm summer. The coldest month are January and February (-7C), the hottest month are July and August (20C).

The territory of the city is up to 300 sq km but well developed transportation system (buses, trolley buses, trams, underground) makes any part of the city easily accessible. Kharkov is one of the greenest cities of Ukraine. It has more then 12000 hectares of parks, alleys and gardens.
Kharkov is a city with a remarkable history - in the period between 1917 – 1934 Kharkov was the capital of Ukraine.

The Kharkov region is situated in the North-East of Ukraine. It borders Belgorod region of Russia in the North and North-East, Lugansk region in the East, Donetsk region in the South-East, Dnepropetrovsk region in the South-West, Poltava and Sumy regions in the West and North-West. The territory of Kharkov region is 31,400 square kilometers. The extension from North to South is 210 km, from East to West - 220 km
The relief of the region can be referred to as a slightly rolling plain with a small incline to the South-west (towards the Dnepr watercourse) and the Southeast (towards the Don watercourse). In the Northeast the Mid Russian Eminence forms part of the region, in the South there are spurs of the Donets mountain-ridge.

The Don River basin accounts for 75% of the region's water resources. The main water-way - the Seversky Donets river- is the right hand tributary of the Don River. The total length of 867 rivers is 6,400 km and there are 156 rivers that exceed 10 km in length. There are also some lakes in the region, the biggest one called Liman. About 50 artificial bodies of water were created in the Kharkov region in the XX century; the biggest ones are Krasnooskolskoye (Chervonooskolske), Pechenezhskoye (Pechenizke), Krasnopavlovskoye (Chervonopavlivske). The Northern part of Dnipro-Donbass water canal runs through the territory of the region.

The Kharkov region is divided into 26 districts while there are 16 towns, 62 urban-type settlements, 1861 villages and farm-steads (khutors) on its territory. The biggest towns are Kharkov with the population of 1,600,000 people, Izyum, and Lozova. Other important towns are Kupyansk, Chuhuyiv, Balakliya, Bohodukhiv, Zmiyiv.
The population of Kharkov region is about 3,170,000 people. 78.8% of the population lives in towns. The average density of population is 100 people per square kilometer.

The region has relatively high level of economic development. One of the major reasons for this is its favorable geographical location. Proximity to coal and metal resources of Donbas and Trans-Dnipro region contributed to the development of mechanical engineering and metal working industries. The vicinity of Russia, its Black Earth belt region, its South-West and Southern regions predetermined the development of agriculture in the Kharkov region. An important factor was also the presence of its own raw materials resources. This contributed to the development of fuel industry and power engineering, chemical and petrochemical industry, glass and porcelain, faience production, and the industry of construction materials

The region can be divided into three industrial zones: Central, Eastern and Southern. The Central zone (Kharkivsky district and the neighboring districts) is characterized by the high level of specialization and industry concentration, this zone is Ukraine's leading center of energy industries, electromechanical, transport and agriculture mechanical engineering. The Eastern zone spreads around Kupyansk. The leading industry here is mechanical engineering, the Kupyansk foundry supplies parts for transport and agriculture machinery. Food processing including sugar production and light industry are developed here too, as well as the industry of construction materials. The Southern zone is rich in natural gas deposits - Shebelynske, Yefremovske, Krestishchenske and others. The towns in this zone are mostly specialized in mechanical engineering, chemical industry and construction materials production. Cement and roofing slates manufacturing plant in Balakliya is one of the largest in Europe, and Izyum is known as the centre of eyeglass lenses and optic instrument production. Light industry and food production is present here too.

The Kharkiv region agriculture is specialized in grain, sugar beet, sunflower, meat, milk, vegetables, and fruit production. A large selection centre "Ukrainka" is known as the R&D centre of agricultural science.

Kharkov region has a good transport network, 60% of which is railway. The total railway length comes up to 1442 km! Kharkov railway junctions serve 10,000,000 passengers a year. The automobile transport though outstrips the railway in the amount of passenger traffic: buses serve almost 12,000,000 people a year. The major highways and freeways going through the region are Kharkov - Moscow, Kharkov - Simferopol, Kharkov - Rostov-on-Don, and Kharkov - Poltava. There are 16 intra-regional, 68 inner regional and 342 district roads. The total length of motorways is 15,000 kilometers. The Kharkov airport used to have 200 flights a day; almost all of them were passenger flights
