Africa Travel

Regions: South Africa  West Africa  North Africa  East Africa  Central Africa

Psst... Don't see your African travel destination listed? We have over 12,000 travel agents. We'll find the right ones for you!

Focus on the Southern Africa Region

Southern Africa is widely varied, ranging from forest and grasslands to deserts. Also, you will find low lying coastal areas and mountains.
In terms of biodiversity, the southern Africa region hosts  grassland, bushveld, karoo, savanna and riparian zones.
Even though humans have made inroads, there is still a proud zoo's worth of wildlife including White Rhino, lion, leopard, impala, kudu, blue Wildebeest, Vervet monkey and elephants.
Humans in Southern Africa include the Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi, Ndebele, Tswana, Sotho, and Shona people, BaLunda, Mbundu, Kikuyu and Luo people. The various languages share some common Bantu traits.

Focus on the West Africa Region

West Africa accounts for about one fifth of the continent of Africa The majority of the land is low plains with isolated higher spots. Of this the northern portion is semi-arid.

Focus on the North Africa Region

The main feature of the North Africa region is the fabulous Sahara desert which covers more than 90% of the region. Valleys in the Atlas Mountains and along the Nile valley are the principal sources of cultivated land. Also, find farming in the vicinity of the Mediterranean coast. Crops of note are cereals, rice and cotton, and woods such as cedar and cork. Fruits include biblical figs and dates, and also citrus items. The Nile valley is the most prosperous farming region, where elsewhere irrigation is fundamental. The population centers are always close to water, for beyond lies the desert.
In North Africa the name of culture is Berber and Arab and the fault lines boil down to whether you midnight at the oasis or prefer to nomad the Bedouin ways. Naturally, this is a generalization for an African region of immense size.
From 1940-43 North Africa was the location for the legendary North African Campaign of World WarII.

Focus on the East Africa Region

East Africa is one of the better known African regions to people from elsewhere. It sports Mount Kiimanjaro and Mount Kenya which are the tallest mountains in Africa. On the other hand it boasts Lake Victoria, and the world's second deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika.
When one thinks of Africa and animals, East Africa is where one thinks of. Hefty creatures like the elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard prowl the area while the short tempered black rhinoceros gazes feebly after them.
When thinking of the legendary continent, one also dreams fondly of safari! Who can come boldly to this land and not experience safaris with gun or camera in hand, staring down the fierce lion or the growling wildebeast, all for the once in a lifetime perfect shot or satisfying snap or click-whir?
East Africa is classified as an equatorial region but because of the higher altitudes and the cooling wet winds, it's cooler than you might think, so when you visit remember to bring your jacket.
On the other hand, in parts of Kenya and Somalia, which is also a part of the region, it gets fairly dry. Sometimes they go for years without rain. And, in Ethiopia, the weather is more tropical with monsoons.
Learned scientists have always believed that all humans erupted from the area, particularly around the Awash Valley of Ethiopia, Koobi Fora in Kenya and Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. It is quite possible this is where the valiant crew of the Battlestar Galactica made their final landing, thus populating the earth with the human/cylon mix to eventually destroy the earth through global warming processes. But, I diverge...

Focus on Central Africa

As befits the equatorial nature of Central Africa, or as it is sometimes called, Middle Africa, it's wet and warmish all year long. Further, when one thinks of the dark continent of Africa with the jungle bush, or more precisely, tropical rain forest,  one thinks of Central Africa. Even so, in parts of the region, in the eastern mountains, there is to be found the typical mountain climate, and in the southern parts, there is even a bit of desert.

Getting Around the African Countries

The first thing to do for the uninitiated Africa Traveler is to rely heavily on their travel agent. However, generally speaking, public transport can be fun. Africa, by the way, is not a country...It's a continent. You would be surprised how many people think the latter. If you goal is an African safari, for example, then pick your favorite safari country. You can't safari all of Africa.
After taking a stamina pill, by water, visitors can have fun traveling around on boats, riverboats, ferries, cargo boats, and sailboats. Some modes of water travel doesn't offer much service, though. Cargo boats often don't have five star accomodations. But, then, it's not as expensive as taking a plane ride, and more outrageous fun too.
On land, for the adventurous, the rental car is the way to go. One authority says in Africa, the journey to the destination if the fun of the trip. This is what is meant by "taking the tour." You are paying good money for your African tourism adventure, so make the best of it on your holiday.
For air, the preferred luxury hauler is the commercial jet. The usual first stop is South Africa and the Johannesburg International Airport. It can be fun and instructive to rough it, but it's more productive to have someone waiting on you. The other two airports are the Cape Town International Airport and Durban International Airport. If you are a sissy, and don't want to rough it,  domestic in coutry flights leave from there to most major cities in Africa.
From South Africa, you can hop a better kind of bus to Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe. One company is called Mainliner. You can even catch a Greyhound bus if you prefer.
If you prefer the rails, there are trains in Africa that can take you from South Africa to Namibia , Mozambique , Botswana , Swaziland , Zambia and Zimbabwe. This is what they call the Shongolo Express. Another is the Rovos Train, which is said to be luxurious.
Africa can be had by car as well. Roads are said to be copious and in good shape with lots of gas stations and hotels and lodges to stay in along the way.

The African Experience

The thrill of the safari and the smell of history awaits you on your African tour. The land of the proud Zulu and the mysterious  Berber, and even the endless Saharan stretches have been waiting impatiently and longingly for your gaze.
The savannahs, lush with wildlife, and civilizations of today and eternity beckon to you as you plan your Africa vacation of a lifetime. (It's more like your holiday of a lifetime if you speak with an English accent...)
You have studied all the tour tips, and read all the tourism information, and secured the best tourist advice you could find, and now at the end of your research, Africa demands your presence, your vacation, your holiday, your trip of adventure to the very cradle of human civilization. It's AWESOME! It's AFRICA! It's YOURS...
Experience the land of endless adventure destinations...the continent of Africa.
